This book had so much promise...but it was ruined by too-stupid-to-live Shiarra. If it weren't for some of the side-characters, this book would have been a DNF.

It's very hard to get behind a novel - especially one written by an author who has written other novels I've liked - when the main character is such a terrible person.

She spends a good page or 4 talking about how supernaturals / the "others" have become accepted more and more by society. How there isn't very much racism because the law cracks down so heavily upon those who do/say racist things. How it's supposedly "taboo" to have racist mentalities against the Others. Unless of course you're a white hat. And Shiarra, WELL, she's not racist or anything... she just won't go near them if she can help it, or associate with them unless the money is good, or have any sort of accepting attitude towards their nature, but don't worry guys she's not racist. RIIIIIIIIGHT.

Another thing about this Shiarra character...she will constantly refuse offered help, just because of who it comes from - only to go back and beg for the offer of help she previously turned down because, being the idiot that she is, has backed herself into a corner and is banging he head against the wall trying to make an out.

The one small bit of brightness in this review is that the plot was intriguing at times and there are a few well made secondary characters that made my pain somewhat worthwhile...enough to bump my rating from 0.5 stars to 1.5 stars

Now note that I've read the second book too, so some of my frustration is probably due to the fact that she is still too stupid to live in the second book and I know that there is no apparent growth of character. Very disappointing...will not continue with this series

I got this free on Amazon and I am so glad I did, it was really good. It had werewolves, vampires, mages, familiars, nutty people and some very funny moments. At the start of the book I thought it too detailed and somewhat jumbled, I quickly changed my mind on that. The author is very detail orientated and it fits well into the story with all the characters and mysteries happening, The world has been built and it is fully developed, I can't wait to read the next one.
Basically it is a story of a young human women PI who is thrown into the world of the "Others" and everything goes awry. An strong force is out there and she is hired to find it. She finds herself hunted by dangerous beings, her family and friends threatened. She must step into a role she is not comfortable with, armed to the teeth. Her ex the sexy were Chaz proves he is more than she thought he was, helping her in her darkest moments. She is teams up with the mysterious Arnold, a mage, geeky and smart. Sara, her trusted friend and partner. Royce the sexy evil (?) vampire is tall dark and dangerous. And an ancient belt...you'll have to read it to find out more.

Rereading this series in preparation for the release of book four! Where book one is just okay, the series keeps getting better and more interesting!

This book was very frustrating early on, I felt that we did not get to know Shia very well and she came across as unlikeable. She is very judgemental and isn't as strong minded and independent as I like my heroines to be. The big bad was pathetic imo, the reason why Shia was targeted by them was lame and as we didn't actually meet them until the very end there wasn't any sense of danger from these strangers...it was very much a damp squib.
The vamp (I actually cannot remember his name 😂) was basically a carbon copy on Anita Blake's Jean Claude, actually the whole book screams Anita Blake before she became a sex crazed nymphomaniac! I predict the Vampire and the Were fighting over Shia for a while in the sequels.
The second half did improve and will try the next one I just hope it gets better because it does have potential.
P.S if I read the phrase "it gives me the willies" one more time I will scream 😂

It wasn't bad. Nothing terribly original, though - or possibly I've read too many "urban paranormal fantasy" books.

The library has more of the series so I may continue it.

I liked this world and Shiarra because she was actually scared and careful around Others. Not racist, just very careful. And that makes sense, because of vampires, werewolves and mages suddenly came out then yes I would be scared too. And perhaps not mix with them when they can tear my head off.

Shiarra is a PI who takes a case she does not want to take. But somebody has to pay the bills. She knows better than to mix with mages and vampires. She is tough, but with a good head on her shoulder and she knows this case will likely kill her. And I do like that and that she tries everything to get out of a bad situation. She is a worthy kick-ass woman.

The story is about her trying to get an artifact, staying away from mean vampire Royce and just generally staying alive and kicking some ass later on. Since the person holding the artefact does not want to give it up.

The men then. She has an ex who turned out to be a werewolf so Chaz is in the doghouse now so to speak. Then there is charismatic and scary Alec Royce but evil vampires are so not for her, well we will see about that. The thing is that every sane person knows not to get involved with Others because they make you sign a contract. This is to protect humans but in that end that contract is way scarier cos in case of a violent death they can't be prosecuted.

I liked Shirra and her PI partner Sara, I liked Arnold who shows up later and I sure liked Royce. The only one I am a bit on the fence about is Chaz. Nothing wrong with him but it was mostly because of the crowd of posers he was with.

At the end the scariest thing in this book was the White Hats, creepy racists peeps scare the hell out of me.

Conclusion:

A good start to a new series. There is plenty of action and as for the romance, you know I can't tell you. A good book that I recommend. There is also this fun vibe over the book that I enjoyed.

Good

Hmmm, what to say.... I did like this story overall but some elements were a little off-putting at times. Basically, in a world that only saw supernatural beings, i.e. the Others, out themselves following the tragic events of 9/11, certain prejudices still run high. Shiarra Waynest, the story's P.I. heroine, is not immune. Her particular prejudices seem to be borne mostly out of fear and an ignorance stemming from unfamiliarity so I think there is hope for her. I hope so anyway because I feel like I want to like her but I do cringe everytime she refers to an Other as a "thing" and an "it" in this book. I did enjoy some of the secondary characters who help her survive her first main foray into the world of the Others and there is enough here to make me curious about checking out the second book in this series.

Hunted by the Others is my kind of paranormal / urban fantasy! Shiarra is a very good heroine, in that she is definitely flawed, but fiercely loyal and strong minded. This review was originally posted on (un)Conventional Bookviews
