One of the things I really like about this series is the pacing. There's always something going on in the moment and we get a steady stream of action while still maintaining the overarching direction of the series as a whole. Jorg has a run-in with somebody....and well look a that, Jorg stabbed him in the eye. Somebody makes a smart-assed comment about Jorg's age aaaand.....yeah Jorg just smashed his face in with a hammer. The quick resolutions to a lot of these minor situations feel so good because of how brutally simple they are. No long flowery descriptions, just quick, ruthless and to the point. At no point does it ever feel like it's dragging.

Sometimes however I feel like that can also be a weakness; often the larger and more important situations are resolved in the same way, and it comes off feeling rushed. The final confrontation with the Dead King is a good example. So much buildup over three books and the whole issue (who is the Dead King really? How can he be stopped?) is wrapped up in the span of a page or two. Granted its done so in a way that is consistent with the already established rules of the magic system, so no mcguffins or deus ex machina here thankfully. Another of note would be the Pope. I thought maybe she'd find a way to be a thorn (lol pun) in his side for a while, but....nope, he just....well. I guess she's dead. In the span of about a half page.

That's kind of why I felt this one was the weakest of the three. While the breakneck pace was perfect 95% of the time, I felt it needed to slow down just a touch in some of those crucial moments.

A great ending to a very good series. It was a pretty surprising ending, which made it great, but I will say that I enjoyed the second one a little bit more.

It's hard to quantify this book. So harsh and cruel. And not for kids.

And yet, out of the harshness and awfulness - he saves the world.

Imagine a world 1000 years after a nuclear apocalypse where will now forces the world to be - upstaging reality. The old tools of the "builders" would destroy that world completely. Jorg wants to change the predicted outcome.

Maybe the author wanted us all to believe that being just plain stubborn is a good thing.

PG 18 for language, content

I was satisfied with the conclusion to the series, but overall didn't enjoy this book as much as the two previous.
