So, I've had this book on my Kindle for a while but never quite got around to reading it. Then this week one of my friends here on gr had added it and I was like 'wait a minute... don't I have this?' So obviously I did have it and being in need of a good book to read I though 'why not?' After reading it however I'm torn on how to rate it.
I want to give the author props for creativity with the whole Pandora's Box, it was interesting and I'm really looking forward to reading up on the stories for the others who were also affected. The romance however, it was just strange and lacking all around. Yes the H&H ended up together but after finishing the book and thinking about it I felt a bit cheated in that department. Maybe it's because it's the first book in the series, but everything was so jumbled with different bit's of information that the H&H didn't actually spend a whole lot of time together.
In the end 4.5 stars for creativity and plot, and 3.5 for the story and romance it's self.

The Darkest Night is a fun introduction to a new series (for me at least) that goes around demons, crazy people, violence, hot drooly (yes, I mean it as drool-y - it should be a word, it’s awesome) sex and extreme redecorating. But we all love crazy people don’t we? And violence. And sex. And hotties. Beats the hell out of watching Animal Planet.
Even though the book was a great read I found many problems regarding it. It stars with the typical PNR problem: the ease with which they hooked up. I’d like some more obstacles please! Then there’s the true love conquers all problem. They’ve known each other for a few days so true love is out of the question. What is it then? Lust? Desperation? Drugs? Noodles? You tell me.
I didn’t like Ashlyn because she is too dependent. First Macintosh* (lol) whatever his name and then Maddox. Plus she was always taking things too lightly. First Maddox has sex with her and then locks her up because he has stuff to do. What’s her reaction? She gets a wee bit angry and then says to herself "Meh, still want him, he’s hot". Not cool. And after being his captive she still falls for him. While this is a classic move for most romance novels, I have to admit that I don’t agree with it. You simply don’t fall for the assh*le who’s keeping you prisoner unless you’re into BDSM or something. Plus he’s a demon and he’s violent and creepy. He may be hot but still, come on! Exaggerated much?
Maddox is… special. Even though he has a wall punching problem, tends to destroy most things around him and is a serial killer, he’s pretty cool. I mean how often do you find a guy who knows how to repair stuff? And he’s hot. I mean duh! It’s PNR we’re talking about! Duh! And he like has powers and stuff. And he like kills people. And has a tattoo. I mean awesome, dude!
I’ve always wanted to be in the mind of a psychopath, there’s a certain depth to life in there. Let’s take some examples, shall we?
First there’s a typical “problem” between a husband and his wife.

Then there are some kids thrown along the way.

And finally the moments when you just sit back and relax.

(I could do this all day!) Yep. A pretty high chance of all this happening to the person marrying this guy.
Probably Maddox is like this because of sexual frustration. Once he gets laid properly his demon goes back to sleep.
Anyboob, the final score is 3.5 or 3.25 or 3.19999999999999. But that’s beside the point. The Darkest Night is a nice intro to what seems like a good series but it lacked action. As you know the action-eating monster living inside me needs to be fed so it wasn’t totally happy with the situation. Just one location and few to none proper action scenes don’t make a fun story. These warriors have potential so put ‘em to good use! Aaaaaaaaand it was a bit cheesy.
That’s it!
~The End~

2.5 ⭐
I'm really amazed by how everything in this story unfolded in just a week! If there had been more depth in the story and better dialogues, it could have easily become my favorite. The concept is really interesting, and I personally think it would be more fitting in the Supernatural genre rather than Urban Fantasy.
I genuinely liked every character, and the multiple points of view in the third person added an extra layer of enjoyment for me. I'm definitely planning to explore the rest of the demons' stories at some point in the future. Can't wait to see what adventures lie ahead!

It's the first book I've read from this author, so that's a big adjustment I have to make.
I liked the fact that Showalter chose to narrate the story instead of filling it with useless dialogues. In fact, I think she avoided those because she knew she sucked at it. I mean, in the few dialogues here she created such confusion by only writing he, she, he, she while there were more than two people talking in the same room.
It was a mildly entertaining story but I have to say that the author's writing style was big downer.
I hope for the sake of my eyes that she'll improve on the following books.

I can't believe that everything in this story happened in a span of week.
This could've been my favourite if there was more depth in the story and much better dialogues. I like the concept. I don't think it should be Urban Fantasy genre. Supernatural is more apt.
I like every character and the multiple povs in 3rd person was an absolute delight for me. Gonna explore the rest of the demons later someday.

I hate reading smut like this book... But it was very enjoyable just the same.
prrrrr... I've never been into Violence before, but Maddox definitely changed my mind ;)
Wasn't brilliant, the characters were not well developed or written so it was hard to connect with any of them, also the plot never really went anywhere - it felt like we were going round in circles the majoriy of the time with the same result every other page... needless to say I feel compelled to read the next book because there MUST be a reason why she is a NY best selling author (sadly, i feel as though i blinked and missed it with this offering)
I gave it four stars, but I really wish I could it 3.5. It was entertaining and went quickly. We'll see how much of the series I can read before I get bored with it.
