This book is more timely than ever. A difficult, brutal read at times, but I felt called to witness this fictional account of Margaret Walker's great-grandmother. An important book that dispels the romantic myth of the Old South.

Incredible and magisterial tale of antebellum and postbellum south from an underrepresented perspective in U.S. One of the great American novels. I loved it.

I really loved reading this novel. It was so well researched and the prose was so beautiful. Following the perspective of a mixed slave through the war and into the reconstruction period, the novel dives into many issues in Southern America. I enjoyed Viry's journey into womanhood and loved her moral fortitude in a time where morality seemed to have been abandoned.

Might pick this up again since I’ve heard such good things, just not my mood right now
