Long but worth it

This book is long. However, it was well worth the time. Seemed to lull around 3/4 of the way through and the development of the love between the two main characters was not as completely angst filled as I’d like. Too much outside story and not enough of the two of them building up to the happily ever after. Just my take away. The first 3/4 of the book flew by but then kind of fell for me. I did enjoy it, just wish the end was more angst and love filled instead of plot focused.

Carter Dominick has been a character I've wanted to know more about since the first time we met him, and while I have had to wait what feels like forever for his book, it was totally worth the wait. This book, while long, was freaking fantastic. I honestly don't think there was a scene I wasn't heavily invested in. I definitely lost some sleep while reading/listening to it because I couldn't put it down.

Carter Dominick is truly the definition of a broken hero. He's got a complicated past, on Diana had been part of off and on over the last 13 years. They meet when he saves her during a military operation. Nothing happens (his married and always faithful to his wife) bu Diana does develop a crush. And then they are constantly running into each other over the next 13 years, until Carter is brought in to save her again. Only this time, he's not married anymore, and those feelings he's been experiencing ever since his wife died aren't something he can ignore anymore.

Honestly, I don't know how to express my enjoyment for this book in words. Carter is a complicated man with a lot going on in his life. While I wanted his story badly, I was also nervous about how I would feel considering he's always been portrayed as begin seriously in love with his wife, and she's not alive anymore. But I've got to say, I honestly really loved how that part of the story was handled. I loved how Carter's and Rebecca's story was revealed over the course of the book, and I love how we got to see him go through the entire grieving process. I love how he cared for and loved Diana. I absolutely adored how their relationship developed over the course of the entire book.

I know this book is long, over 650 pages, but it was the right choice for this story and these characters. I think it was important to see both Carter and Diana at the various stages of their life. Even with having read all of Brittney's other books, Carter was still such an enigma and getting to see him before, during, and after everything was the perfect thing.

While you don't have to read any of Brittney's other work to enjoy this book, it would definitely increase the enjoyment of this book to at least read the rest of this series. Again, I know it's long, but it was so worth it for me.

Carter Matteo Dominick! FINALLY!!!

From book 1 of this series I’ve been waiting obsessively for Carters story and after all this time it did not disappoint!

Carter has been an intriguing character from the start and I’m glad we got to go back in time and see the development of his character that we’ve come to know in this series. The evolution and character arc of Carter from before his wife’s death to present time was emotionally charged and realistic in the most amazing way. We finally understand his motives, his  thoughts and his inner struggle with finding and accepting the real/new him.

Going to the FMC Diana, I’m SO happy it was a new character we haven’t met before and not one of Carter’s previous relations. This made the most sense to me and was hoping this was the case before the book even released. Diana is a self assured, kind and brilliant woman who is strong and resilient and the perfect equal for Carter.

Not only was their chemistry sizzling but their relationship/their friendship alliance from when they first met continued and grew as time moved on. They bring the best out of eachother and allow the space and freedom to find themselves in a safe and supportive relationship (which both strongly deserve after all they been through).

The action plotline had twists, turns and secrets that still leave this series (but not couple) on a cliffhanger. I’m impatiently waiting to see how it wraps up and how are love/hate Oliver and Mya storyline goes.
