The thing I love the most is Middle Grade Books - they are full of characters with so many flaws, I cannot help but love them all. And when you add Queer stories to Middle Grade Books, I cannot help but jump on the chance to read them all. Me = surrendering all my love. There are in total 16 stories in this anthology and it makes sure to almost include all different identities on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. They didn't only talk about coming out, or finding a queer partner - but also the hate these identities face along with just simply existing.

My favorite stories included - "The Purr-cle of Life" where our main character goes to pick out a new cat at an animal rescue, which was a task that they found really difficult in the beginning; "The Girl's Best Friend" - I'll just say it deals with platonic crush <3; "Paper Planes" - it's simply about being their for yourself while being proud; "Petra and Pearl" - featuring two trans girls who met while writing fanfic and talks about coming out story of them; "I know the way" - a split timeline story with the historical side being about escaping the plantation and the present being about our protagonists being there for each other; "Balancing Acts" - our main character starts to understand that e can still love eir love for gymnastic; "Come Out, Come Out Whenever you are" - it is a time loop story of our MC standing up to his bully finally; "The Wish and the Wind Dragon" - a nonbinary pirate kid says hello as they go on to call and speak a wind dragon!; "Splinter and Ash" - our main characters are finding a way to be their true selves in a "traditional" court... and aahh you get the picture who totally awesome this anthology is!

I was provided with arc of this book in exchange of an honest review

I loved every second of this! The stories were all well written. Some were fun, some were heartwarming, some were tear jerkers. A great collection for young readers.

This was a cute collection of queer stories that was perfect to read at night before bed. A little less diverse than I was hoping in terms of represented sexualities and genders - there was far more representation for WLW than for MLM for example - but I still feel like it captured a range of different experiences that middle grade children can through as well as a range of different genres, which was fun!

My favourites from the collection are Paper planes by Claribel A Ortega (this was so sweet and I loved the concept of the paper planes, want to read more by this author now!), Devoyn's pod by Mariama J Lockington (the character voice felt so clear, I adored the way marine biology came into play and it captured so well the feeling of feeling left out) and The golem and the mapmaker by Molly Knox Ostertag (heartfelt, sweet and creative - I continue to love everything she writes).

This collection highlights proud queer stories through tales of pirates, zombies, witches, historical fiction, and so much more. One aspect I really enjoyed was how though the characters have their identities, they experience so much more than being boiled down to just their gender identity or sexuality. These are fully fledged out characters that experience loss, fear, heartbreak, and so so so much queer joy! This collection is a love letter to all LGBTQIA+ people, but especially to queer youth. This was the perfect read not only for Pride Month, when I read it, but for all times of year. I laughed, cried, screamed with joy and felt so many more emotions while reading this collection. Five stars all around to This is Our Rainbow, this collection was everything I hoped it to be and more.

A handful of stories were pretty good. The main issue is not individual stories but that those stories were edited together with a lack of coherency, it's not well-rounded, some id are overrepresented (lesbian & NB) & other barely appear at all (is there a boy here? any boy at all, cis or trans for that matter). It would be fine to do a anthology for those specifically, but then advertize that.
For individual stories, I liked the magic realism story with the letters Justina Ireland's story & the story about the two trans girls. The zombie story got a smirk out of me.

“A wish is always worth making, like a risk is always worth taking.”

So cute and emotional and fun! I liked the mix of fantasy and non fiction. There’s such a fun variety of stories.

My favorites were:
  • Girl’s Best Friend -
the shapeshifter element was really interesting and I loved how “squish” was used!
  • The Golom and the Mapmaker -
“we’ll make our own maps” ahhhh!!! Molly never misses.
  • Paper Planes -
magic paper air planes and drag queen bonding!!
  • I Know the Way -
be brave!! Echos of the past 🥺

I give this book 3.7/5 stars, some of the stories weren't very entertaining. However, some of them I really enjoyed! I loved the story about Kai because I feel people with E/Em/Eir pronouns should be recognized more. Happy pride month!!!!!!
