Things you know about Grisham's books:

* They're great yarns
* You can't put them down
* They kind of fade to the end
* You can't wait for the next one

This was a great story about baseball, professional athletes, jealousy, spite, forgiveness. Grisham can really pull you in (although Calico Joe's stats were TOO out of this world) and have you believing in the characters and the story. He's the greatest storyteller I've read.

Although I know nothing about baseball, and although I try to avoid sport-related novels (I exercise because I have to, but I'm not fond of sports), I admit I liked it. If you don't concentrate too much over statistics and pitching performances it's just a story of a bully who's dying, and finally agrees to apologize. Actually, the plot is quite simple. The pleasure comes from the style of Grisham's writing.
It's a nice short story: not a masterpiece, but pleasant.

It's baseball season so that means I like to read a few baseball books because A/ I love baseball and B/ Hope reading anything related to baseball will bring me good luck in my intense fantasy baseball league! Unfortunately, this one by John Grisham didn't wow me as a reader, baseball lover or probably won't help my fortune. I guess I'll have to read something else for good juju for the upcoming year, ha.

I'm reiterating much of what other have said so I'll keep it short. I like Grisham's storytelling in general and I like sport stories, so this book was a natural choice. You don't need to be a fan of baseball or even understand the game to enjoy this book. The characters are well developed and the dialog is natural and believable. Overall, a good read. :-)

A short, sweet story. Wonderfully nuanced characters that develop throughout the course of the book. You do not have to be a sports fan to enjoy this truly endearing read.
