Actually about a 3.5/5 stars

I am a big fan of dystopian books. In fact most of my TBR list makes up of them. The Delirium series by Lauren Oliver has been one of the series I have been meaning to read for a very long time. I don’t like reading reviews of books before the time, because most of the time they spoil me, so other than the basics I went into this book blind. And boy am I glad I did.

So in this dystopian world, love has been classified as a disease with some weird name that I can never seem to remember. On the day of every child’s 18th birthday, they need to get this surgery to “fix” them and stop them from essentially falling in love. They are paired with someone else, and this person will become their life partner. Creepy right? (They even mention how an 18 year old got paired with a 70 year old, talk about gross…)

In this story we follow the life of Lena, a girl who is often trying to hide away from the dark stain that comes with her family name. Her mother was known to be a sufferer from the love disease, and even though she has had multiple surgeries, they all prove to be unsuccessful (but I’m more than willing to bet that they gave her one hectic headache). Lena is later told that her mother jumped off a cliff side, committing suicide. Lena really does not want this fate for herself, so just like most of the other kids her age, she looks forward to the day where she can be cured. At least, until she meets Alex.

Alex turns out to be an Invalid from the wilds masquerading as a cured. He is the person that Lena has been taught to fear most of her life. But still she can’t stop herself from falling in love with the boy who has hair the colour of autumn leaves.

Their forbidden romance has a Romeo and Juliet feel, the two of them hiding how they feel even though there is an impending dilemma just around the corner, AKA Lena’s cure date.

Spoiler Lena and Alex plan to run away from the society in which Lena has grown up in after Lena learns that her mother is not dead after all. However, they get found out the night they want to leave. Lena’s cure date is shifted up, and Alex needs to race against the clock if he wants to save her. Although in the end, as they are making their getaway, they are overcome with soldiers barreling down of them. Lena manages to get across the border, but when she turns around she sees that Alex stayed to stop the soldiers from getting to her. (See where the Romeo and Juliet feels comes in right?)

This story has got a cast of fantastic characters such as Lena, Alex and Lena’s best friend Hana and even little Gracie. The romance between Alex and Lena, although sometimes may feel rushed, is the perfect example of First Love. Everything between them is electric, from the way they banter to the way the two of them come from very similar yet different backgrounds.

Hana is the prime example of a teenage rebellion who is rebelling just because she can. In the end I don’t think she really knew what it was she was rebelling against.

“Snapshots, moments, mere seconds: as fragile and beautiful and hopeless as a single butterfly, flapping on against a gathering wind.”

Overall I thought this was an intriguing read filled with heart-warming moments as well as a few cringe worthy ones. It’s a great plot, and with the cliff-hanger I find myself itching to get a hold of the next book.

This book is something. Lauren Oliver introduce us to this world in where love is a disease and every bit of humans lives is controled by the government and it just feels so real that it scares you.

The writing style is really good and easy to follow, though I have to say that the book is a bit heavy towards the middle, it pick up a lot in the last 80-100 pages and it just blows your mind.

What I like the most about it is that it leaves you thinking. Thinking about love, and about how it afects everything in the world, human relationships, books, movies, the nature, everything. Thinking about how governments could be in the future, and a little bit about how they are now, because the lies, hiding the reality and the lost of freedom is something that's happening in our world, today.

I really like the characters in general. Hanna was one of my favorites along with Gracie. I have to say that I wasn't so fond of Lena at the begining, but when she started realizing how things really were, I started respecting her and then she won me. Alex was perfect, a bit creppy at first (was that just me?) but I really appreciate him.

I can't believe how it ended though. He can't be dead, it's not possible. She's all alone now on this big scary new world and omg I'm gonna miss Alex so much, I kept thinking that it was all gonna be a dream but no :(

Delirium is a really good book, I think everyone should read it and think about all the messages that it has...

Very good -- love story/dystopian teen novel. Love is a disease that must be cured in order to ensure safety and "happiness" and order. Lena is scheduled to have "the procedure" that will cure her, and then she meets a boy and falls in love. She would rather die than give him up, as in all teen romances, a la Romeo and Juliet. At least for once, there isn't a love TRIANGLE in this teen drama -- and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Now I can watch the movie when it comes out. And I seriously hope it lives up to the book. This is one of those series I wish I hadn't waited so long to start. I wanted to start the second book immediately but I don't have it. These YA post-apocalyptic stories always suck me in. Well, most of them do, and this is definitely one of them. It's a quick read too. Definitely recommended.

Honestly, I didn’t like this book. For such a lengthy audiobook nothing really happened until the last little bit. The narrator’s voices weren’t my favourite and distracted me from the plot of the book. You could probably skip 75% of the book and still be able to read the rest of the series (which I will not be doing).

I really enjoyed this book! I liked the characters and the storyline. Wondering if there is going to be a sequel??

I loved the story . Can't wait to finish them all
