This is a VERY quick read (less than an hour). The book is written as notes between a mother and her teenage daughter left on the refrigerator door.
The relationship between this mother and daughter is amazingly touching. Although a sad topic this book is a must read. Plus it is a very quick read so anyone can find the time to squeeze it in.

This is described as “a novel in notes”, I’m not sure a 20 minute read constitutes a novel but maybe I’m just being picky.
I found it a very unsatisfying read, not surprisingly there is no character development whatsoever, which I could forgive if the characters were more interesting.
The major event of the book is a life altering one but it is handled in a clichéd way, with the content of the messages and the responses nothing you haven’t heard or read before. Which would have been ok if the writing was beautiful or witty or funny or something, but it is just plain – as you’d expect notes left on a fridge to be. Because of this they failed to evoke a strong emotional response in me and I think the situation should have.
In a way it sort of reads like a parable, it is attempting (I think in a heavy handed, unsubtle way) to remind us to spend time communicating with those we love and to make time for what is important in our lives, as the time available is finite and could be ripped away from us at any minute.
Which is a worthwhile message but presentation is everything and the superficial way this is presented means I can dispose of it without much thought – which, for me, is a bit sad.

This book was amazing. I read it in just under an hour. The characters are so dynamic, despite the fact that they’re only shown through their notes. I cried at the end which was a surprise to me since I don’t normally cry for books. All in all, it was an amazing read.
Graphic: Cancer, Death of parent
This touching novel told entirely through notes left on the refrigerator by a mother and daughter was a boon to my soul. It was a super quick read but exceptionally powerful. I knew early on where the story was going, but that did not hinder my experience whatsoever. Instead, I think it enhanced my emotional reactions and I teared up a few times, eventually sobbing towards the end. At one point, I was so overcome, I couldn’t read. My eyes were full of tears, my cheeks were wet, and my sobs were audible. Claire and her mom’s relationship was so relatable and though it’s been a while since I was fifteen, I could absolutely understand where Claire was coming from, but at the same time, now that I’m a mom, I could appreciate her mom’s side as well. My own relationship with my mom has had many ups and downs, and this story allowed me to take a look at our journey and to truly treasure the relationship we have now. I love you, Mom!!! The notes Claire and her mom leave do not give a full picture of their day to day lives, but they reveal just enough for the reader to know what is happening. The writing was succinct and simplistic and beautifully captured the essence of what it is to be a teenager and a mom and the undeniable connection between the two. After finishing, I was left with a sense of hope and a gratitude for love.
If you enjoy uniquely written books and might be in need of a good cry, I highly recommend this novel!!

I liked the format of the book.
I did like the idea of the plot - even the “light notes go heavy” format. But the mother was such a bad parent, and even though that happens in real life, it felt too much. Like - talk to your daughter. She’s left alone for days, and no one seems to know or care? Not buying that.
Not buying that no one from the hospital made sure, they got help as a family. And the dad? Why didn’t he insist on helping or getting help? Again, it might happen, but it was too forced.
A good idea, badly executed.

Moderate: Emotional abuse
Quick read. You know those notes you scrawl back and forth to the people you live with? The entire book is composed of the equivalent of those. It's an interesting exercise, but it turns out I missed all the description, etc. Still, even without all of those things the ending was a tear-jerker.
