DID NOT FINISH: 3%

Double crap on a cracker the size of my butt.

I'll admit I wasn't entirely into it at first, wasn't overly feeling the characters but I've read several series by Jennifer so I persevered and I'm glad I did, I really got hooked in the end! I'm looking forward to reading the 2nd and 3rd book to see where it goes given it's a relatively short series (3 books and one novella).

3.5

I feel like this story was a copy and paste of the Lux series. Zayne and Roth were just Daemon split in half and Layla was Katy with white blond hair.

I can even remember some lines in this book from Obsidian like when Zayne tells Layla to run, it's almost like Daemon telling Katy to run in Obsidian from the Arum.

Why do the MC's always have to be saved by the guy and then they tell them the girl is weak and needs to stay at home while they do all the fighting???? Probably my biggest complaint about her books.

I love her writing style and the characters made me laugh so yeah I didn't hate it or love it.

I'm guessing I'm rooting for the wrong guy too. Great.

Eh. It was fine. It wasn’t my true love for a couple of reasons:

1. I’m too old.
It pains me to admit this. I think I’ve finally outgrown 17 year old narrators in high school. This is a sad day in my life.

2. It was driven by plot rather than characters.
Character-driven stories are my cup of tea. I love watching characters grow, relationships develop, etc. I grow bored much too quickly if it’s just plot, plot, plot. Which is what this one does. I find I can’t care about the plot if I don’t care about the characters. So, I was bored several times.

Will I read the next one?
Yes, but only because my book buddy is reading it. Can’t leave her hanging.

4⭐️

Idk, went back and forth between 3 and 4, so I guess 3.5⭐️

It’s good, and I enjoyed it, and I’ll read the next one. But also…some of the way it was written almost felt like it was trying to hard to be young? I know it’s a YA book, and I’m totally down for that, so… Also, I wanted Layla to have more confidence.

This was an outstanding start to a series. I'm already inlove with Layla and Roth, even zayne to be honest. The story is so cool. I have only read one series that had a gargoyle in it and it wasn't the main focus, so the "Wardens" are so interesting to me. It's new and exciting. I felt like this book took me right into the story, it hooked me right from the start. The way the book ended made me need to read book 2 immediately and I can't wait to see how Layla copes with what just happened and the development she went through. Roth is everything to me

“People with the purest souls are capable of the greatest evil. No one is perfect, no matter what they are or what side they fight for.”

Layla is half demon, half gargoyle, or as they are called in this series, Wardens. This means that she’s never really fit in anywhere because the other Wardens don’t completely trust her and her friends have no idea what she is. Not to mention the fact that she can’t get too close, let alone intimate with anyone without the risk of taking their soul. Layla makes the best out of her life and Zayne, a Warden and friend (who Layla has been in love with for years) helps with that, but that doesn’t mean that deep down she isn’t lonely. Enter Roth, also known as Astaroth, a crown prince of Hell. Layla can be around and close to him without having to worry about taking his soul. You know, because he doesn’t actually have one. His presence also helps to ease the cravings she has for souls. You know what that means. It’s time for a love triangle!

I know a lot of people don’t like books with love triangles, but they don’t really bother me. There is usually one character that I prefer above the other and I’ve always been lucky enough that the love triangle has worked out that way that I want it to. This book is really no different. While I like both Zayne and Roth, I gravitate toward Roth and really feel that he is the better guy for Layla. Mainly because while Zayne has known Layla for a long time, there is still a part of her that he doesn’t accept, while Roth accepts her for exactly who and what she is. For me, that’s alway the most important thing. I think it also has something to do with how much I absolutely love Roth. I always forget how much he makes laugh in this book until I reread it, and then I fall in love with him all over again. Don’t get me wrong, I like Zayne, I just don’t love him, at least not in this series. (Yes, that opinion changes in The Harbinger series, but that’s not what we’re talking about here.)

I just love this book so much. I don’t care how many times I read it, it still gets to me every time. It always makes me laugh and the end always makes me cry, even though I know what happens and how the series ultimately ends. Jennifer Armentrout just has that ability, and I love her for it.
