Layla is a 17 year old and an unusual combo of half warden and half demon. She is raised by Wardens (who the world knew as Gargoyle statues until they went public around 6 years before the events in this book), helps them find and kill demons and has never questioned that she's on the right side of this eternal battle... until she's saved from one demon by another, her eyes begin to open and she realises the world is not as black and white as she has been brought up to believe.
The story takes place in our world, in modern times, infuses it with an angel and demons trope with the twist of the Wardens/Gargoyles, and has an urban, gritty air to it that also feels oddly cosy and fresh. There is a love triangle but it’s well done and while angsty, it’s realistic considering the ages of the characters. I found it light, fun, and easy to get through and digest despite the darker elements that make up the foundation of the story. The writing is riveting, and the wit and snark of Layla, Roth and Cayman in particular made me laugh regularly. I loved all the Supernatural references and other more modern shows. The inclusion of a new species in a demon/angel book theme was a great one, I loved the addition of the Wardens, beings apparently of pure souls whose whole life purpose is to defend the human population against demons and keep demons a secret but can still do bad things, and they’re not as weird & creepy as they sound. In regards to characters, I love Layla, her perspective of the world from her precarious situation and position is a great juxtaposition to Zayne’s personality as a pure and incorruptible Warden, and Roth’s Princely demon personality. She struggles so much with her basic instincts as part demon, while being surrounded by Wardens who abhor everything demons stand for and have brought her up to deny and repress any urges she may have. All in all an enjoyable read and one I’ll definitely add to my reread list.

I had forgotten jow incredible JLA's writing is. I laughed so much in this book. There were times when I cried with laughter, especially in the early chapters. I really liked the premise of this. I thought it was a bit different from your typical demon based story and I liked that. I loved the characters. Roth... I totally understand now why everyone raves about him! He is amazing. It was so well paced and really difficult to put down. I cried so much at the end. I cannot wait to read the next! I only recently got into tabbing my books and this one is crazy full! It was incredible. I don't know what else to say other than read it!

Me encantó!!! No puedo esperar a leer el desenlace de esta historia. Es preciosa. Con los sentimientos a flor de piel siempre que leo algo de Jennifer L Armentrout!!
This was so much fun. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a paranormal book. After my Twilight phase I kind of stayed away from them because they kind of started to be similar to each other. But when I heard about this book back in, I think, 2014 I knew I had to read it. It took me four years to finally read it and I’m a little mad at myself for that because this was so good. It deals with gargoyles which is something I have not since being done in YA before or even in adult books (I could be totally wrong and there may be others out there, so if anyone knows please let me know I’d like to check them out). If you’re someone like me who grew up with the tv show this will bring back memories and some nostalgia. While it’s completely different from the show, just it being about gargoyles will just bring back memories of the show. That’s why I had to give this five stars because it was different and new it wasn’t like other paranormal YA books that deal with vampires, werewolves, and other creatures of the night. With that said there are some problems with it that if I had read this four years ago I would not have fully picked up on or might have just ignored all together. One of those issues being that Layla kind of felt like a damsel in distress more than half the time. She does fight off the demons and other people that are after her but Roth or Zayne always seem to just come and help her out because she can’t do it all on her own. In even in the end when she is the one to help them both out, the other Wardens (that’s the name of the gargoyles in the book) come to help her out in the end. The girl deserved a shining moment of being able to fully defend herself and others. I also didn’t like that Roth felt like kind of a stalker at first. Yes we find out he was sent to watch and protect but at first it was creepy and not cool. It’s also a reason we don’t get to see Layla fight her own battles. I will also say that book starts off kind of slow and is hard to get into but once it gets going it’s a fun ride. But even with those issues it’s still a lot of fun and I’m so excited to see where this series goes.
I have a strange relationship with JLA. I invariably spend the first several chapters of her books contemplating ditching them because the language irritates me (“crap on a cracker” and “sweet Mary mother of baby Jesus” come to mind - IDK why, but I find those lines so annoying!) But then because I hate not finishing a book, I keep reading and get sucked in and devour them in a couple of days. Same goes with this one.
I ended up mostly enjoying this for what it is - an easy read that doesn’t require a lot of thinking. I will say that having read a number of JLA’s series’s now, the formula seems to be pretty consistent each time. And I guess if it’s working for her, more power to her. But sometimes it feels like I could switch characters from one book to another and not notice the difference.
Anyway, not a bad read if you’re just after something easy.

This clearly wasn't for me. I fell off reading it for a couple of weeks, and just have no drive to return to it beyond purely what's going to happen in the plot. But since I'm not invested in the characters, the world or the narrative, I could as well read a synopsis to get the same thing out of it.
