To be honest, I wasn’t exactly sold on White Hot Kiss or the entire Dark Elements series when we first found out about it. Gargoyles just aren’t high on my “favorite subject matter” list and I’m wasn’t crazy about the title (I’m still not crazy about the title), but I decided to give the prequel, Bitter Sweet Love, a try. I adored it. I instantly loved the characters and world, and I felt like Bitter Sweet Love set up White Hot Kiss perfectly.

No matter what you think about Jennifer’s books, she knows how to grab your attention and hold it. I’m never bored reading one of her books, and White Hot Kiss was no different. From the first pages I already cared for Layla and Zayne. It took me a little while to warm up to Roth (“bad boys” are becoming slightly boring to me) but eventually I figured out the appeal for this particular bad boy, and by the end of the book Roth became my favorite character.

White Hot Kiss was sold to me as a story about gargoyles fighting demons, and the story does have some of that. However, I found White Hot Kiss to be more about the demons and Roth, and less about the gargoyles and Zayne. I wanted more gargoyles. I personally haven’t read any other story about gargoyles so I wanted to know more about what makes them tick, and I just didn’t get that. I’m hoping as the series goes on we get to learn more about these stone creatures.

Let’s talk about the romance in this book. Is anybody up for an impossible love triangle? Because White Hot Kiss has one for you! Oh, Zayne, Layla, and Roth. What are we going to do with you guys? Look, I don’t like love triangles. They cause me to pick a certain person and I just want to love everybody. I was all for Zayne at the beginning of this book, but like I said before, Roth definitely has a certain appeal. I feel like Zayne has a back up plan so maybe I should be rooting for Roth. Eh, they are both good guys so I don’t even know. Why can’t one be an absolute tool? Also, I know Zayne and Layla “can’t” be together because of her demon blood but why is her kissing him another issue? It’s not like every time she touches somebody she sucks their soul out. Is she scared she’ll get too caught up in the moment? I just don’t see her sucking away Zayne’s soul when she loves him so much.

While I wasn’t originally sold on White Hot Kiss, by the end I was absolutely in love with it. This is another great Jennifer L. Armentrout book. I loved reading it and I devoured every single page. I can’t wait to read Stone Cold Touch.

It's not my favorite JLA series, but it did remind me of her standalone (maybe will be a series someday?) Unchained. I liked that book and thought it had potential for a series. There are definitely some similarities and at times I felt I had dejavu while reading it. I even was questioning myself on whether I had already read this series already. This series has me intrigued (cliff hanger over course) and I'll keep reading.

I really wish some of JLA's book covers were better. This one among many others just don't do the book or her writing justice.

Okay JLA, I see you.

This book was so much fun! Layla is a phenomenal main character with a difficult backstory, and I love her budding relationship with Roth. Can't wait to see what happens in the next installment!

**4.5/5 stars**

My goal for this review is to make you desperately want to read the book without giving anything even potentially spoilerish about the actual plot away. This book was fantastic, but it's something that is best experienced for yourself. I suspected after reading the prequel novella, Bitter Sweet Love, that the Dark Elements series was going to become one of my new favorites. After reading White Hot Kiss, I know this to be true.

The characters in this novel are superb. Layla is a strong, kickass female, the best type of female lead. Zayne, her best friend and the guy she's had a crush on forever, was hot and protective and, for the most part, had Layla's best interests in mind throughout the book. Roth, the super swoony demon with a softer side, finished up this triangle in a great way. Yes, there's a love triangle. But it's believable and, after meeting both of these amazing men, I can't blame Layla for being confused.
"See, I was raised in Hell. You could say I'm socially awkward."

White Hot Kiss is Jennifer L. Armentrout at her best. The storyline is unique (I say again, GARGOYLES!). The characters are well-developed and complex. The world-building was tremendous. I felt like I was living there with the characters. It was witty at times, heartfelt at others and there was more than enough action to keep the interest of those who need to have things happening all the time. I finished it in one sitting because I literally could not put it down until I found out what happened. The ending gutted me and I need more of this series immediately, if not sooner.

The only complaint I had with this book is that Jas and Dez from Bitter Sweet Love were nowhere to be found. I loved them. I wanted them to make an appearance in this book. Fingers crossed they'll be in the next one...

4,5/5

I love Jennifer's writing, but I'm doubling back to reading her older books while I wait for the 4th From Blood and Ash book (March CANNOT come fast enough). As usual, I love her books, but this one was a little bland. The world building didn't excite me as much as her newer books, but I was still interested and invested in the story. I'll keep reading, I just know she's done amazing work since these books.

Addicting to read

Literally couldn’t put it down. Just enough vavavoom and mystery to keep the reader engaged. Now I just want to read more
