Another gem from Stroud. Though no character was as witty as Bartimaeus, Lockwood, Lucy and George's individuality and uniqueness comes to the fore in this book as Stroud weaves a mystery set around a worl of ghosts becoming a daily menace all over the world since the past fifty years or so. With ghosts and Visitors thought to be the greatest peril, even in dangerous times one cannot forget the perverse and capricious nature of a few vile human beings who can even put creatures of the dark to shame. An interesting book, though predictable, but the predictable parts were offset by some really good writing which kept me hooked to the book always awaiting the next scene. Stroud's own unique way of writing continues to blaze forth in this book as well. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

This is a story about children who hunt ghosts. (Adults are incapable of doing it in the story because they can't sense the ghosts). This particular story is a murder mystery, which isn't really all that complicated. I figured it out before the end, and I usually stink at these things. However, while the story is a mystery, I don't think the focus of the story was the mystery. It was on the characters and the details and fears of ghost hunting. There I think Stroud succeeded admirably and I enjoyed this easily as much as his Bartimeaus books.

I'm not entirely sure what age group this is aimed at. There's no kissing or romance and it was about children, yet the writing has an adult feel to it. That is I think the characters and setting has a depth of realism that probably wasn't necessary for a children's story.
