This book is excellent for anyone in need of a pep talk to get inspired about anything. While it focuses on creativity, Gilbert says that this can take many forms. If you are inspired to be creative in the arts, go for it. If you are inspired to garden or rock-climb or teach, you are also creating in these processes. I think this book would be great for most anyone in need of motivation.
Gilbert takes us on a journey through her view on creativity. A creativity that encompasses us all and not just those of "The Arts." Through challenging old stereotypes of the suffering artists and ownership of creations, she encourages curiosity and joy. I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it to anyone who wants to find a more positive view on creativity.
Read about half, couldn't finish. Hadn't intended for this to be a hate-read, even though I do tend to use 'eat pray love' as a punch line; I'm all for motivating folks to harness creativity and was curious what Ms. Gilbert might have to say. What I heard was LOTS about how amazing Ms. Gilbert and her famous friends are, lots about the jumping-from-human-to-human of creative ideas (literally...), lots of rather lofty and privileged advice-giving. The kicker for me was when she went on a little rant about how she did NOT write the book to give advice to anyone, she wrote it for herself, and if you the reader happen to glean something helpful, cool, but if not, well don't blame the author, she wasn't writing it for anyone but herself anyway. Glad she cleared that up: I shut the book right then. A self-reflective book on one's own creative process and musings is not what this is; it's all directed at YOU the reader. Like being trapped as the unwitting audience to another human's monologue-thinly-disguised-as-dialogue, my relief at escaping was great.
There was no big magic for me. There was no magic at all. I don’t think I should read more of Gilbert’s non-fiction books. But hey, I finished it all in a day so that’s a plus.

I’m not in a creative field, I didn’t think this book really applied to me. It read more like a memoir than a self help book. But I came to see application of her advice that is appropriate for my “non-creative” life, and moments of my own in which I triumphed over fear to connect with the energy of the universe.
