It's Septimus Heap and princess Jenna's 14th birthdays. Their mother Sarah has a huge party planned and everyone is looking forward to it. Jenna is concerned about something living in the attic above her room and wants Septimus to take a look. He has his mind on other things and refuses, with dire consequences. It is Merrin Meredith, the evil DomDaniel's previous apprentice, who has created a Darke Domaine in the attic and this will soon spread over the whole town. Merrin has the two-faced ring and as he has worn it for 13 mooons he is just coming into his powers, something ExtraOrdinary wizard Marcia realizes just a little too late. Soon the whole town is enveloped in the smoky clouds of the Darke and the shield around the wizard tower is crumbling. It is up to Septimus and his friends to salvage their town before it is too late.

This is an imaginative, funny and boisterous book; the sixth and last (or at least, latest) installment in the Septimus Heap series. Well-paced and exciting the whole way through - I could hardly put the book down long enough to sleep. An immensely satisfying read! Top notch fantasy, highly recommendable to anyone who's into this genre.

There was a lot of potential in this book that Sage just doesn't deliver on, like the possible fissure between Jena and Septimus - and then some that is delivered awkwardly, like the tension between Beatle and Septimus. Overall, I felt like this could have been a great book if it had been written and handled better.

A fabulous book. The best Septimus Heap book yet. It was vivid and I nearly felt the Darke creeping under my door. It was better than expected. I had though the bulk of the book would be Septimus in the Darke Halls but that only took up a chapter. Some surprising turn of events were a lovely way to finish off the book. I loved how Princess Jenna was so stubborn about her new witchy clothing. :)

Darke definitely lives up to its name as it is the darkest installment in the Septimus Heap series, but Sage's humor is still present throughout the entire book. Not many new characters are introduced but tons of old ones come back, like Simon*yeh* and Marcellus and Merrin. The main characters do grow some in this book; Septimus becomes more mature as his training gets more serious. Jenna seems like a little brat in this book though; she orders Septimus around like he's supposed to work for her, refuses to take off her witch cloak even though its dangerous, and doesn't care about Beetle at all, I feel sorry for the guy because she obviously cares about her palace way more than him.
SpoilerI'm still not sure on how Beetle survived in the Hermetic Chamber without the Suspension Charm
.

I enjoyed ready this and am definitely excited for the final installment of the series.
