It's not what I expected (that being: a spoopy gothic tale of mystery) but it was good- finding family, breaking out from the path others want to put you on and granting others to be complex and multifaceted. Kind of feminist?

..."much ado about nothing". This book was way over hyped. A substantial part of the text was placed on trade. Why? For me, it did nothing to add to the story or clarify the plot. The miniaturist is never fully explained, and neither is the line "carefully, the woman places it where where she has always intended it to lie" (pg. 3). Did she cause the fall of the Brandt house? Did she only want truths to be revealed and no one to die? This book is disjointed and seems forced. It was a miss for me.

Lovely, descriptive prose and an interesting read, but the main character developed quickly and u realistically in my opinion. I enjoyed the book, but it was not unputdownable, nor good enough for me to plan on reading the sequel any time soon.

Set in 17th century Amsterdam, this novel tells the story of a bride who arrives at the home of her new husband only to discover her life will not be what she believes it to be. There is so much going on in this novel and the story pulls you in rather quickly. The author has several scenarios dealing with acceptable and moral behavior of the characters. Including the prophecies given to our protagonist by way of miniature items for a dollhouse which was a gift from the groom to his new bride, this is a thoroughly imaginative read.

This book definitely starts out slow, but gains a fantastic momentum in the middle. The body of this book has twists you do not see coming and I reluctantly grew to love the heroine, Nella. The ending was like the beginning, a little blah and it all just sort of ends. But I do love historical fiction, so it was a fun tale to be apart of!
