This book wasn’t what I expected at all in the best way. As the book went on I became so invested in these characters and their troubles. I thought throughout “This could be a movie” and I’m pleased to find out it was turned into a drama. Needed

I have owned this book for over three years and finally decided to read it (because I wanted to watch the BBC miniseries adaptation after reading it lol I love a good BBC miniseries ok)

It was dark and mesmerising, and it was SO WELL WRITTEN. The setting is so vivid and real. The characters really grew on me, especially Nella and Ophelia, and they were all so fleshed out and individual. This book was full of sadness the entire way through with little glimpses and joy and hope.

SpoilerHowever, I wish we found out more about the miniaturist though like why was she so interested in Nella? how DID SHE KNOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN???/???? help

This was not my fave.

A young bride in 17th C. Amsterdam is bewildered by her new husband's lack of interest in her and by the eerily realistic miniatures that are delivered to her.

I found this a very unpleasant read. At first that was a positive thing, because the author managed to create a very oppressive and eerie mood that I was loving. I do wish I'd read some spoilers, though, because a couple of incidents described in graphic detail really ruined the whole thing for me. Now, that's about my own personal List of Topics I Hate Reading About, and shouldn't necessarily reflect on the book, but at the same time there wasn't enough to the rest of the book to outweigh it.

I could get into a lot of other nitpicky things about how well or not-well the book justified and integrated the main character's obession with the miniaturist, and certain commonplace scenes and events that seemed like they would have a mysterious payoff in the end but seemed to in fact just be filler, but it doesn't REALLY matter because by that time I wasn't enjoying the book. I do think this might be someone else's favourite book, it just definitely wasn't mine.

I couldn't stop reading, but I was disappointed at the end. All the hype surrounding the book is difficult for me to understand!
It had exciting aspects but in the end the tension burst like a balloon! I was hoping for more...

Not really what I thought it was gonna be. Liked the turn around on gay and black people though

Set in 17th century Amsterdam, this plot revolves around a young wife's miniature house and its contents. The characters were quite well written but I would have appreciated a little more depth to really feel involved. The plot was really good and a great pace, which meant there were times I couldn't put the book down. I found the main, thrilling part of the plot to be unresolved, with an almost unfinished feeling. I learned a little and it made me quite interested in miniature stuff.
