I debated what to rate this for a while. On the one had, the major story is super interesting and engaging. On the other hand, there are way too many characters to keep track of and it did not need to be this long. If this was condensed down, I would have loved it more. There were so many side plots and random things that I think were irrelevant.

I liked this book a lot at the beginning, but I didn't love any of the characters and I felt like I was told more about their depth than was shown to me. I also don't know a lot about the history of Amsterdam, and I wish the historical setting offered more grounded details for the reader. Longer than it needed to be.

The author has skillfully mastered the art of surprising the reader with unexpected twists; I can't remember when I read another novel that so frequently made me think, "I didn't see THAT coming!" Those of us who love to read cherish books which engross us, calling us back to drop life's other duties and find out what happens next. I couldn't wait for free time to dive back into the Miniaturist and these characters. I'm definitely looking forward to the BBC mini-series.
