Soapy but immersive. Enjoyed getting lost in this world for awhile

This was a good book, not my favorite, but still good. I very much enjoyed the author's character development for all of the women in this book. For a historical fiction set in a time where women weren't seen as anything but baby machines, Nella, Marin and Cornelia's stories bloomed pre to post climax. There were a lot of unhappy thing in this book, and it was not that I needed a happy ending persee. But, do I feel like the events that drove these characters to bloom neeed to be wrapped up because the character development theme was not enough to outweight the other themes generated in this novel? Yeah, actuallly, I do. I would give this a solid 3.25-3.5/5 stars.

Absolutely fabulous. I read most of it in one sitting on a plane and couldn't put it down. The twists and drama of the first half unfurl beautifully in the second half. I got teary around three times, which doesn't really happen with books for me.
Two comments/criticisms:
- The book reads like it should be in first person, and actually as I read it, sometimes I just switched the words to make it so.
- Ironically enough the story would be just as good if the miniaturist and the cabinet house bits were not in the book at all! I'm probably just being naive, but it seems only very loosely attached to the plot.

Fabulous book. Lived up to all the reviews and awards. I have been meaning to read this book for ages but have only had time now to devote the attention it assuredly deserves. A wonderful story set in Amsterdam of rich merchants, the inhibitions placed on women at the time, and double standards of behaviour by those who attest their devotion in church but whose behaviour in private smacks of greed and revenge. A main character to admire mixed with a little otherworldliness of the Minaturist herself.
