This is a page turner. I cried buckets at the end.

I read this book for book group, and liked it a lot. A good, solid story. I really did come home from work and look forward to reading the book- can't say that about every one of them....:-) Looking forward to her next one.

It’s so boring and awful and I don’t care at all. Feels painful to read further

Sad and scandalous.

A page turner, but it left some important threads dangling at the end and that annoyed me.

I could feel the potential in this author, but the story really disappointed. I felt like we were coming to some epic conclusion and it just fizzled. It was as though she wasn't sure how to end the story. There was also a tremendous amount left unexplained. It definitely felt like a first novel - a spark of genius there, but inexpertly handled.

2.5

An interesting if somewhat implausible tale of a young merchant's wife in 17th century Amsterdam, which reads like "Jane Eyre" as rewritten by a Women's Studies undergraduate. Rather too overwritten for my tastes, with a lot of anachronistically modern sounding characters and dialogue. I get the appeal of these kinds of books - exotic locations, enough period detail to make it feel like a brainy read, and a femme-friendly take on history - but it's not for me.

Exquisite! Such a beautiful exploration of love and the lies we tell ourselves and others
