If I had to use one word to describe this book it would be disappointing! The book was enjoyable to read, and numerous times I felt it hard to put the book down wanting to find out the mysteries of Nella's new life and her miniaturist. However, by the end of the book it was very apparent that the book didn't really have much of a point to it. The main component of the story, I found, was to find out who exactly the miniaturist was, but when we finally find out their identity the results are very disappointing and almost thoughtless. The identity of the miniaturist seemed too easy and definitely was not worth the wait as it was a major let down! I very nearly gave this book 2 stars instead of 3, but felt that even though the book was a disappointment it still had me hooked from start to finish.
This book was very enjoyable, but do not expect a conclusion about the Miniaturist. I was devastated to finish the book with the unanswered question hovering in the air of who, how, and why the Miniaturist did what they did.
I did not mean to finish this in one sitting but holy hell.

I have mixed feelings about this read, it did not follow my expectations at all. I was expecting a gothic horror, filled with the hauntings of miniatures predicting terrifying events.
To an extent, the book did have some prophesising miniatures created by the fabled Miniaturist, but it lacked the fantastical and ghostly aspect I was hoping for. The Miniaturist isn't so mystical after all.
However, Burton has still woven a fascinating tale in 1600s Amsterdam. It follows Nella as she navigates her new family and married relationship and as she quickly discovers how strange this new family is, she finds herself fighting for its survival. It's well written, and intelligently created.

I liked the book. The writing was very good, but the story has issues. What I didn't like was the miniaturist. It was too much the puppeteer, behind the scenes, pulling strings. The story was interesting enough without it. There didn't need to be this mystery person who is never entirely resolved.
