I loved this book. It's dramatic and sassy and emotional and so so heartfelt. Brought me to tears so many times with just a few lines. Surprisingly Dickens is so sassy in this he's just dissing the nobles and the clergy left right up down everywhere and it's beautiful to witness!

On this re-read, I really have to say I loved the story in A Tale of Two Cities. The writing at times was a little more challenging than many other things I've read, but once I focused, it flowed very easily for me and I was able to appreciate many of Dickens's great lines and witty descriptions. The ending for me was both tragic and happy, which I suspect it was meant to be. I appreciated this a lot more than I did in high school and it does make me more inclined to give other Dickens works a chance, even though in the past he was one of my least-liked classic authors. I'm really glad I re-read this!

Sandwiched between perhaps the greatest opening line in literary history and the greatest closing as well is the story of one of the great upheavals in world history, but told through a very personal viewpoint. How did the French Revolution affect one particular family? One of any number of single characters? That was the story that Dickens was trying to share, through a novel that is so different than most of the other works that Dickens had published. We often view an upheaval like the French revolution through a very clinical lens and forget what effect it must have had on the individual. ToTC reminds us that this was indeed a revolution in every sense of the word, and the world would never be the same again. Highly recommended!
