I found reading this book again with a fully formed brain, it still holds some of the same charm it did when I was 13. I'm now more fascinated by the idea of continuous sheets—how can I get my hands on some?
Very cute children’s book I am still fond of as an adult. Read it in 6th grade as required reading and never got rid of my copy. It inspires imagination in young people and reminds us to not hold on too tightly to anything, but to enjoy what we have while we have it.
This was my brother’s 7th grade summer reading book. I read it with him to hopefully ease the burden of working on this “children’s classic”. I thought I could make it fun, make him like it. It bore the hell out of us both. If teachers can stop assigning dull books and killing the spirit of young readers, that would be great, thank you.
Yet another one of the books that I myself did not read but was read TO me by my 5th grade teacher. I don't really remember much about this book. I think it's about this guy who goes to this island called Crakotia( excuse my spelling) using 21 balloons or something. He finds on that island( its all coming back now) a whole little society of people. And then there's big volcano eruption and it destroys the whole island. In case you didn't know the island was real as was the volcanic eruption. The island also really is covered by the ocean like in the book. I think in the end the man goes back home or something. Really, it was an interesting read. The only negative thing I have to say about thing I have to say about this book is that I remember the man in the book referred to a black person as "colored" or "negro" one of those. I mean I know that at the time this book was written that was the "proper" term but I mean, couldn't they consider editing that out since it IS a children's book.
Honestly, the science checks out so I'm pretty sure this book is actually autobiographical.
Lots of fun and while it's quirky; it doesn't feel Roald Dahl level quirky, just a right amount for a funny, lighthearted, adventurous, jaunt type of a story.

About a man who goes sailing in a balloon and plans to be away from human life for a long time. He loves sailing balloons. He encounters difficulties and finds himself on an island with people who have strange ways. Kind of a funny book. Good characters.

Amazing to me that this has hung on as a children’s classic given how racist it is.
