This book has been hiding on my Kindle since my kids were in elementary school. Finally read it. I wanted to love it but it was just so dang slow! Great historical details, however. Definitely would recommend to my own kids.

I really enjoyed Speare's depiction of life during the time of Christ's teaching. It kind of fleshed out what's presented in the Bible about the Jews waiting for a Messiah under the oppressive rule of the Romans. I enjoyed Daniel's journey and growth from a boy wanting vengeance to a teen/young man looking for something more.

I was a very nerdy child and one of my goals from elementary school on was to read every book that had ever won a newberry award (also, I made sure to read *every* book that was nominated for the Maud Hart Lovelace award each year, not just the minimum of three that was required to be able to vote. Had to made the best informed decision!) I came pretty darn close to my Newberry goal, just missing a few of the older ones that the school libraries and the local Waldenbooks (I still get sad every time I go to that shopping center and it’s a furniture store now. So many memories

Newbery Winner 1962. Daniel is a young boy who lives in Israel in the first century. He is full of hatred and wants vengeance from the Roman soldiers who tore his family apart. He joins a band of robbers, hoping they will soon start the fight. Then he hears a man speak-Jesus-a carpenter and his life is changed.

There was a surprising amount of action in this book. It wasn't preachy-it just happens to take place in the lifetime of Jesus of Nazareth, and Daniel meets a fictional version of Jesus.

Really interesting read of life in Galilee and Jesus and vengeance vs. peace.

Beautifully written, Speare does a wonderful job of bringing the personality of the Savior to life. Daniel is a very well developed character who suffers a great many disappointments in his life that lead him to choose a path of violence and hate. Eventually he experiences a beautiful and believable conversion. The book left me in tears.
