There were a few passages that brought everything in a story together so profoundly that it kind of felt like being stabbed in the heart. That’s kind of Saunders’s thing (for me at least) but it always sneaks up on me. Definitely re-readable, when I feel like I would benefit from another a miniature crisis of spirit.

Loved this collection. Very reminiscent of CivilWarLand in Bad Decline (especially “Liberation Day” and “Ghoul”) the stand out story for me was “Elliott Spencer” I’m going to be thinking about that one for forever. His stories are always lessons in empathy, even the worst of his characters are complex and nuanced. My heart grew three sizes reading this.

George Saunders is my favorite living writer.

As with any short story collection, some are winners and some are not. Same here, and this was actually my first foray into Saunders. So I do wonder about the similarities with the ones I liked and his other novels or collections — but I'll have to read and find out.

Audiobook, as narrated by various performers: I don't think I had any issues with any of the performers for the narration of each individual story, and actually I liked the narration done by Saunders himself on two of the included tales.

Moje pierwsze spotkanie z autorem, więc może nie będę obiektywna, albo będę aż zanadto. Jeżeli ktoś lubi grubą warstwę metafory i absurdalnych sytuacji, a wewnątrz nich, gdzieś ukryty moralny przekaz - czujcie się zaproszeni do lektury. Sposób w jaki Saunders pisze jest chaotyczny, jakby chciał zanotować każdą myśl , każde słowo przychodzące mu do głowy.

Just the unsettling curiosity I want to have from a collection of short stories!

Love this one. The classic George Saunders voice with all its eccentric and detailed characters and backdrops, but I feel he has upped his game with a worldview that is more loving and attentive and has a wider imagination of how it s possible for people to grow- and veers away from some of the overly violent and pessimistic aesthetic that was hard to resonate with / take with me into a world that is already hard enough to be in as it is.

There were parts of this and short stories that I really liked, but I think this confirmed that this kind of literary fiction just isn’t for me.

I can't say that I loved these stories, but the narration on the audiobook was mostly wonderful! The stories narrated by Tina Fey, Jenny Slate, Jack McBrayer, Edi Patterson, and Melora Hardin were very enjoyable for the way they were performed.

some of these were interesting, most were not
