I feel a bit conflicted about this book; I think it's a very clever statement on modern times couched in a fantasy/fairy tale package, but I was frustrated with the main characters and was maybe looking for more of an escape?

I almost didn't like it because it was too real? If that makes sense. It was a great book, so well written and clever but OOF it was heavy and I wasn't expecting that. Still fantastic.
3,5

Great Premise, Not Great Execution
Maybe it was just me but I had a hard time finishing this book. I felt confused and lost at some points even after the halfway mark. Some of the world's lore and stories didn't quite make sense to me.
I kept hoping that there would be a point where I said okay, that makes sense but there never was one. Even when the story wraps up in the last couple chapters I wad still confused. Writing this review I'm still slightly baffled by what I just read.
I love fantasy so I was excited for the premise of princess being cursed and spells being broken and the story of commradary between women but I feel a little let down.
I will never say a bad thing about an author. They had the courage to write a book, get it published, and put their story out into the world and I commend that. I just wasn't the biggest fan of this story.

I had very mixed feelings while reading this novel. Haydu's writing style was very beautiful and almost poetic, which added to the fairy-tale atmosphere of the story, and there were many important issues that were explored by the female characters. This novel raises important questions on sexual harassment, eating disorders, and mental health that many women experience, and there were more than a few that I could personally relate to. However, I found that the story lacked conflict in certain sections that caused it to drag on in spots, and decreased my motivation to finish the book. I did enjoy the two narrator format, and felt a connection to Jane and Reagan, which made me want to finish the story.
It felt like no one could make up their mind. And the writing was just aggressively not for me.

Almost a 3.5, it’s written very YA with adult themes and triggers. If it was written with an adult voice it probably would’ve been a 5. Huge trigger warnings but really good! I enjoyed all the metaphors and comparisons into our world!

Overall, Ever Cursed is a fascinating book. The premise is simple--a young witch curses 5 princesses in order to exact revenge against their father the king. The idea of having to watch those you love suffer, which can be far more terrible than suffering yourself, is a recurring theme in this book. These curses are set into motion the second each princess turns 13, yet can be broken before the witch's 18th birthday.
This book is not a YA fantasy retelling of a fairy tale. Instead it is written very much like a "typical" children's fairy tale in which seemingly one-dimensional characters live in a seemingly simplistic world. However, into this story, the author confronts traumatic issues sexual assault, as well as tackling gender issues, poverty, war etc...in a world that is both racially, ethnically and sexually diverse. There is a lot to think about in this book, particularly how societal expectations can determine the ways in which individuals deal with serious problems. Definitely recommended!
