This book was like drinking three rainbow energy drinks.
The dialogue was very quick, witty, and hilarious.
The characters were distinct and all funny in their own ways (except for Justin I'd argue)
Everything related to the fan club was amazing (Tina, muffins, Mervin)
Very vulgar and starts off reading like a YA book, but I'm glad I kept reading it after the first few awkward-ish chapters.

Imagine yourself playing a good, strong game of D&D. Then you drop some really good acid. Then you sit down at your computer screen and do a mass PornHub marathon. Then you smoke some weed. Then you write a book.
Holy crap, is this book kind of the most amazing thing I've ever read.
Or, to be fair, the most amazing audiobook I've ever listened to. My friend Steph, to whom I recorded multiple Snapchat conversations with me laughing hysterically with the audio playing in the background, questioned whether it would be as funny in written form.
Doesn't matter. Audiobook comedy GOLD.
This is the story of Sam of Wilds, a Wizard('s apprentice) beloved by his king and who has the great distinction of constantly being kidnapped or attacked. He is often met by Dark Wizards Who Want To Kill Him, but only after they've finished monologue'ing.
Sam is joined in his adventures by his best friend Gary, a hornless gay unicorn, and Tiggy, a sweet half giant who likes to smash things and often forgets to pack his pajamas. There's also the small matter of his super crush on Knight Delicious Face, the object of his unrequited affection. Sam definitely knows KDF, also known as Ryan Foxheart, will never love him back. It doesn't help that he's kind of engaged to the crown Prince, who is also kind of a douche canoe.
This book is hysterical, but shockingly sweet. These friendships are real, these relationships are real (not looking at you, Kevin), and there's just this ridiculous unexpected undercurrent of sweetness there that you REALLY don't expect starting out. I MEAN REALLY.
The humor in this is so insane, so raunchy, I had a hard time trying to come up with who I would recommend this to. It's a special combination of person who can really and truly enjoy this. And while I think I know people who would like it, I don't think they listen to audiobooks.

I will say, I have become an incredibly big fan of TJ Klune's work. I have a feeling that I will be busy for a while reading through his books because I really enjoy the way he writes.
The Lightning-Struck Heart gave me all the feels. The bantering that is done in this book is beyond appalling, very sexually provocative, and even blatantly filled with bad puns and very imaginative use of words. I have to say, that is honestly one of the best things about this book. I love appalling and have a filthy mouth myself, so I couldn't have asked for more!
There are a few things that did strike a cord with me though. Firstly, the sheer obliviousness of the main character just began to feel super hard to believe. But then again the secondary characters took every chance they had to call him out on it. But going 75 percent of the way through and still dealing with someone who has just quite literally decided to not see what is in front of him, started wear on me a little.
The only other thing that really hit me hard was one of the conversations that was had between the main character and his nemesis (well sort of nemesis). What was said to the main character was so utterly cruel and heartless it just filled me with disgust and honestly made me incredibly heartbroken that someone would do that to someone else. But the reason it hit so hard is because that's life. There are people who will do and say things sometimes that are truly just horrible. I hated that it happened in the book and I don't know that I will ever like that character for what they did/said.
These are just the little things that irritated me, but overall I love the sarcasm, I love the sexual joking, it's just a lot of fun. I am looking forward to jumping into the next book in the series.

♠ No, sul serio. Non ho la più pallida idea di quante volte mi sono ritrovata a rotolarmi sul letto rischiando di cadere per le troppe risate. Avevo costantemente le lacrime agli occhi. Mi sono ritrovata più volte a dover abbandonare il tolino sul letto e a fare un giro in sala dove i miei stavano guardando la tv per smettere di pensarci e di ridere. Per prendere tempo smangiucchiavo pure qualcosa. Capitemi. Tutto mentre i miei mi guardavano con quegli sguardi che ormai conosco bene, quelli silenziosi che dicono: “Ho una figlia scema.”

♠ Questo libro ha tutto ciò che dovrebbero avere gli YA. Una lunghezza che non annoia mai. Un protagonista reale, con i suoi difetti e le sue qualità, con la sua bravura magica e il suo coraggio, il suo essere a 20-years old virgin prude. E no, Gary, lui non è un membro del Ryan Foxheart Fan Club Castle Lockes Chapter; solo perchè ha partecipato una, tre, otto, tredici, venti, ventisei volte e ha portato dei muffin non vuole dire che lo sia.
Ma sopratutto...fà ragionamenti realistici, si guarda dentro e si trova imperfetto, monologa su se stesso criticando i suoi difetti e poi si da uno schiaffo mentale perchè in fondo non è cosi male e ha anche dei pregi. Ed è vero. Lui non è tutto bianco o tutto nero. Non è il prescelto a cui non serve allenarsi perchè è gia bravissimo e fortissimo e tutto gli riesce facilmente. Lui ha paure reali, paure che analizza lui stesso, che affronta, sa cosa potrebbe diventare e fà di tutto per evitarlo perchè non è quello il tipo di persona che vuole essere.
Seguire l’avventura di un personaggio così ‘normale’ in un mondo di protagonisti scialbi e stupidi è stata una ventata d’aria fresca.
♠ Ha anche un interesse amoroso degno di essere chiamato con questo nome. In realtà trovo persino riduttivo definirlo semplicemente l’interesse amoroso perchè Sam e Ryan sono uno l’interesse amoroso dell’altro, fin dall’inizio, fin da prima che iniziasse la storia, palesemente, in modo imbarazzante, e tutti se ne accorgono tranne loro. Ryan è...Perfetto. Semplicemente. Non perchè non ha difetti, ne ha, è geloso, a tratti iperprotettivo, ha un passato da bullo, si fà trascinare dagli eventi e dalle decisioni altrui (coffJustincoff) e non dice mai quello che pensa/prova davvero. Ma non si può non amarlo. Lui è il cavaliere affascinante e immacolato, quello che cerca di essere serio e figo e invece si fà trascinare in dialoghi e situazioni surreali da quei 3 idioti che si ritrova dietro, quello che per tutto il romanzo vive in un continuo stato di WTF?!, quello che si ritrova a giocare a chi ce l’ha più grosso (letteralmente) con il re delle fate mentre questo gli svolazza davanti nudo (LETTERALMENTE), quello che mentre è in città finisce in mezzo ai membri del suo fan club e si ritrova a dover firmare autografi per le signorine/signore/samcheèlidinascostoesiètravestito che gli sbavano palesamente dietro (come farei io davanti a Bob Morley, per intenderci) e si ritrova in mezzo ad una ship war tra chi lo shippa con Sam e chi lo shippa con Justin. E lui si definisce una Sam Girl. Tanto amore.
♠ Avrei preferito meno cose dette/non dette, meno fraintendimenti e meno vorrei-ma-non-posso tra i due? Forse. Ma mentirei se dicessi di non aver apprezzato l’ENORME tensione sessuale tra quei due. E le allusioni esplicite, e le conversazioni imbarazzanti perchè Sam non ce la può fare ad intavolare una conversazione normale. Ho apprezzato -poco- il fatto che la ‘grande rivelazione’ sia stata fatta da altri ma sono stata felice che sia successa poco dopo la metà e non negli ultimi capitoli.
Il rapporto tra i due poi è qualcosa di imbarazzante ma nel senso buono del termine. I due si conoscono da 5 anni (conoscono è un modo carino per dire che si sbavano palesemente dietro) e Sam ha evitato ogni possibile contatto con lui scappando via ogni volta che lo incrocia nel castello. LETTERALMENTE. Ora però hanno una missione da compiere e non può più scappare ed è tutto doloroso perchè i due si piacciono/amano/vogliono ma agire sarebbe un tradimento perchè Ryan ha fatto un giuramento! e quindi lo slow-building è DAVVERO slow. Chiaro, se questo fosse stato uno YA o un NA qualsiasi ci avrebbero dato dentro fregandose di tutto e tutti per poi ammorbarci con le loro paturnie e i loro sensi di colpa ipocriti e io li avrei odiati e avrei cestinato il libro maledicendo tutto e tutti. Per fortuna non è stato così.
♠ Questo libro ha anche 3/4/5/6/7/8/8,5 personaggi secondari assolutamente fantastici. Gary e Kevin sono una cosa favolosa. Un unicorno (senza corno) gay e un drago sessualmente aggressivo. Non sò davvero che altro dire, basta questo per renderli epici e ogni tentativo di raccontarli o descriverli non gli renderebbe giustizia. I genitori di Sam sono la cosa più bella, dolce e allo stesso tempo imbarazzante che possa esserci, il re e il mentore di Sam dovrebbero essere gli adulti seri e perlomeno ci provano. Gliene và dato atto. Mama è la fata madrina drag queen di Sam e… seriamente, che altro posso dire?? È UNA FATA MADRINA DRAG QUEEN!!
♠ Per il resto, che dire, la trama è una non trama visto che si, c’è la missione che muove la storia ma c’è sopratutto la crescita di Sam e gli innumerevoli dialoghi. Non c’è world-building. Sappiamo solo che siamo nel medioevo, in un paese chiamato Verania e durante tutto il romanzo vediamo solo due città, nessuna delle due viene descritta, tra l’altro. Non pesa. Nel senso che al contrario di altri fantasy dove le città e il mondo dovrebbero avere un peso considerevole qui non se ne sente la mancanza proprio perchè i personaggi catalizzano tutta l’attenzione e grandi descrizioni avrebbero avuto poca utilità e senso ai fini della storia, mentirei però se dicessi che non avrei gradito una mappa (amo le mappe, okay? Don’t judge me).
Tra l’altro questo libro prende in giro se stesso. Tutti i personaggi che incontriamo vogliono fare sesso con Sam neanche fosse la peggiore delle Mary Sue ed ogni volta c’è Ryan che è la mia voce interiore e dice esattamente quello che io penso ogni volta che leggo uno YA. Everybody Sam, everybody.
Menzione speciale per Todd e le sue orecchie adorabili. Una anche per Justin che nonostante il suo essere uno stronzo non sono mai riuscita ad odiarlo fino in fondo. Ad un certo punto sono quasi arrivata a tifare per lui.
