Had some interesting things, archaeology and legends, and I liked the 2 main characters: but it didn't have any depth.

Dr. Ruth Galloway is a forensic anthropologist who lives in a remote area near Norfolk, England. She is contacted by DCI Harry Nelson for a consultation when bones are discovered on a nearby beach. Could they be the remains of a child who went missing years ago? Ruth becomes interested in the case and even though she usually likes being alone, she is also enjoying getting to know Nelson. The archeological facts presented in the story are interesting and the plot and characters are complex. I didn't like that Ruth was so critical of her weight or that a pet is harmed as part of the story. However, I found Ruth to be a compelling character and a development near the end has me eager to read the next book in the series.

I needed something to listen to while seriously under the weather with fever. My current audio book proved too hard for my fever-brain to compute. So I purchased this, probably mainly because the protagonist is an archaeologist, which I thought would be a nice diversion from the usual drunken detectives and newly divorced police officers.

The protagonist is a teacher at a university and lives alone in a deserted landscape with two cats and some much hated overweight. Her description of her weight-induced self-hatred is in fact a highlight in the book. Very well done. Unfortunately, the plot cannot live up to this quite promising beginning, but it's not a bad book and some of the characters are quite interesting.

The ending, however, was really very far fetched!

This was a solid 3.5 stars, but I’m rounding up to 4.

I loved:
- how much the atmosphere played a role in the story
- grumpy boi police man
- that Ruth was sassy and didn’t take shit

I liked:
- the story in general - wasn’t particularly surprising or original, but I was in the mood for a cozy mystery and that is what I got

I did NOT like:
- Ruth’s constant references to her own weight
- the idea that Ruth’s cats were her “baby substitutes” - can’t a woman just be childless and still be happy with her life?

Anyway, I’ll probs read the next one in the series!

Enjoyed! Not a super involved mystery but I liked the archaeology aspect. Looking forward to reading another!

swift234's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 5%

Hated the way the author talked about the protagonists weight. To put a number on the scales and from that say the character is fat, is so short sighted and offensive. I tried to push through thinking surely they won't keep going on about how "fat" she is, but it was mentioned multiple times within the first two chapters, and I refuse to read anymore.
