Amazingly written. Loved to see Indian Mythology in form of Children's fantasy. Can't wait to finish the rest of the series.
Informal, “blog-like”, millennial prose is such a gigantic turn-off I can’t continue, even though the context and world of this YA book is quite interesting and refreshing.
Maybe I'm just not a fantasy fan, but I was pretty bored. It took a long time to get going. There is also a crack about Donald Trump as former demon that seemed to unnecessarily date the novel, besides being inappropriate. It's too bad, because I love the idea of adding Indian mythology to the mythology-fantasy genre, besides having a pair of girl heroes (heroines), but... nah.
Actual rating is 2.5/5 stars.
So... That was one hell of a disappointment. I love Rick Riordan, and when I learned about his imprint, I knew that it was something that I wanted to support. I had read - and loved The Serpent's Secret by Sayantani DasGupta months prior so when I knew that Aru Shah was another MG book with indian mythology, I knew I had to get my hands on it. It should be fun!
Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. I did not like any single character in this book: I disliked Boo with a passion, Mini was the most annoying character ever, and Aru... *sigh* Aru was just...boring. As a matter if fact, the entire book bored me to death. I forced myself to read about the first 200 pages, and then skimmed through the rest because I just could not care less. And that made me so sad.
Maybe it's the writing, because the plot was pretty standard (I don't have anything against quests and everything, I actually love the whole thing!) and honestly had so much potential but... something did not work out for me. I don't think I'll read the next installment but it was such a major letdown for me..... Maybe Chokshi is not an author for me.
It was honestly one of my most anticipated releases of 2018, and it was so underwhelming and disappointing. If ever you did not like this book but want to read another MG book with indian mythology, then I strongly recommend [b:The Serpent's Secret|32618983|The Serpent's Secret (Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond, #1)|Sayantani DasGupta|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1495562210s/32618983.jpg|53206336] by [a:Sayantani DasGupta|684407|Sayantani DasGupta|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1299775871p2/684407.jpg]. She was Aru Shah. Daughter of Indra. And yeah,
maybe she had made an epic mistake, but that didn’t make her any less epic.
Wowww
As a big fan of mythological stories I loved it.
And I loved how it take such a good plot.
And we have to appreciate RC sarcastic narrating.
The characters becomes my favorite.

Gosh, I loved this book! I don't think there are enough words in the English language to describe everything I loved about this book. I loved the introduction to (for me, at least) Hindu mythology, I loved Aru's sense of humor and 'imagination', I loved that the Pandava brothers are reincarnated as sisters (and how Aru & Mini kept reminding everyone- 'it's HEROINES!' :-). While it's no secret I adore Rick Riordan's Olympians series, Roshani Chokshi's Aru Shah brings a breath of fresh air to a genre that is desperately needing more diverse female leads & it opens to door for writers to bring their own cultures and mythologies to excited readers. I absolutely can't wait to see what Aru does next and to meet her other 4 sisters.
Spoiler
or 5! I wonder if the 'secret' Pandava brother will also be reincarnated
