interesting to revisit this as an adult and after having filled in some of the blanks with midnight sun. bella still has an annoying perspective........ but you know what, no regrets on the enjoyment this book brought me as a teen and the iconic film /still/ brings me now
The hype roped me in. I always believe there is some magic behind hype so I finally went out and bought Twilight. I loved the Harry Potter books and their addicting nature, I heard the same about this series and it did not disappoint. It's a love story between a teen human girl, and a vampire, that appears to be a teen as well. The only aspect of this book I was hesitant about was the vampire element, but the end of the book I was actually wishing there had been more vampire elements. Maybe we will see that in the rest of the series? At points the romance got a little too over the top for my taste, maybe I would have eaten it up a little more if I was a young adult, the targeted reading group. None the less it was pretty enjoyable, especially the first half of the book when Edward and Bella were getting to know each other. I know one thing for sure, it's going to make one hot movie.

— She wants to know if we’re secretly dating. And she wants to know how you feel about me.
— Yikes. What should I say ?
He paused to catch a stray lock of hair that was escaping the twist on my neck and wound it back into place.
— Hmmm. I supposed you could say yes to the first… if you don’t mind — it’s easier than any other explanation.
— I don’t mind.
— And as for her other question… well, I’ll be listening to hear the answer for that one myself.

I bought it for my niece, read it and forgot what it was about, entirely. Must be good entertainment with a high rereadability potential :D

Book Bella is a lot more intelligent than Movie Bella , though still with the naivety of a 16 y/o, which I can’t blame her for.

I wanted to read something indulgent and low-effort after finishing writing my thesis and this definitely fit the bill! I can see why my mom wasn’t so keen on my reading it when I was a teenager—the level of obsession that Bella and Edward have for each other is startling and seems rather unhealthy, even considering my expectations for a YA romance. It was disappointing to see all hints of Bella’s personality/interests entirely subsumed by her constant thoughts of Edward. Now that I’m in my 30s, I have different expectations for love and romance, and this ain’t it.
But I will say it has good pacing and definitely draws the reader in! It’s strange because the writing felt clumsy to me, but it was also compulsively and effortlessly readable. Not sure how Meyers pulls that off, but there you have it.
I was entertained, if a bit disturbed. Loved the scenery of the Olympic Peninsula—I miss my home state. I’ll keep reading the series until it gets too stupid or I get bored.
(But honestly the most surprising thing was how often Bella trips/falls. I didn’t realize that her chronic clumsiness was actually part of the plot!)

I’m rating this so high because even though some parts are cringe, it is extremely nostalgic for me (and most people). Reading this has pushed me to start reading again and that’s super special!
