After reading Spider Bones I am quite happy that this book was so similar to the ones before Spider Bones. Yes all her books have many of the same characteristics (body found, temperance works with police, she finds out before they do, someone tries to kill her, she is rescued just in time) but still makes for a good quick read. I think what keeps me reading is wanting to find out what happens with Ryan. One thing I want to know is why we didn’t find out what Katy was left by Cooper at the end of the last book, did I miss something?

Dr Brennan is called in to inspect a body found in a barrel of asphalt near a racetrack. Questions arise as to identity - the missing person from 12 years ago or more recent? Lots of characters - couldn't remember some but author writes in as to who he/she is (in case you've forgotten (nice touch)).

It's Brennan vs. the white supremacist NASCAR fans!

Dead bodies have been showing up in Charlotte, right next to the NASCAR racetrack, immediately prior to a big race. Heaven forbid that something should mar this great event, and it looks like officials are trying to cover things up. Reichs admits that before this book, she didn't have much knowledge of NASCAR. Me either, and I mentally glossed over details about NASCAR she sprinkled through the book. Seriously, what white supremacist leader tracks down a forensic anthropologist to her personal residence in order to threaten her to leave his group alone and then takes the time to educate her on the finer points of NASCAR racing? *eye roll* Add in ricin poisoning, domestic terrorism, and a new potential love interest, and you've got this story.
Brennan almost dies? Check
Brennan dreams about weird crap? Double check.

These books are very formulaic. But people like consistency. It's why chain restaurants have done so well and why there are 18 books in this series. And as much as I love to complain, these books talk about real science, with real time frames. No enhancing to 11 to see the tattoos on the inside of someone's nostrils from store video footage. DNA results aren't done in 10 minutes. You never get the feel that Reichs has jumped the shark with one of her stories. Brennan isn't all-knowing, has her faults, and is wrong sometimes. I'll keep coming back to these books.

Another great book by Kathy Reichs. Shame they finish so soon.

I'm not much of a NASCAR fan so there were parts of this book that left me scratching my head although just like Tempe I did find some of the history of NASCAR fascinating. This book moved at a fair clip and the the forensics were on target and fascinating. I think the last Temperance Brennan book I read I thought was too forensic and medical this had just the right mix. While I figured out the who before the end of the book the why was escaping me until the very end. All in all a fun read.
