Ugh- such a disappointing read! Especially coming off of reading the superb Binti series by Okorafor which was utterly masterful, IMO. It's a100% Harry Potter derivative. There's just no way you can get around it . Item for item parallels found throughout the story. I love the idea of having a magical world, school, beasts, etc., set in an African world and all the cultural uniqueness this setting provided. How cool is it for kids to read about this special place but be able to see themselves in it?! One of the issues with HP (lack of diversity) corrected, right? Unfortunately, I found the writing and character development didn't live up to the challenge of recreating the world effectively. Obviously, I'm not a kid, but the writing felt too simple and the characters annoying. It made me sad that what could've been a truly magical & universal story, in the end felt flat and silly. Okorafor is an incredibly talenteded voice but I only heard a whisper of what could've been in this book.

Great easy read

Love the way the writer offers fantasy for those who may be able to relate more to the African setting! Am excited to continue this series!

I feel that this book did what “children of blood and bone” wanted to do. This was done sooo much better!
African culture, magic, a unique leading character, the spirit world. This book was well written, engaging, and absolutely stunning. I’d highly recommend it to those that love the world of magic.

This book is so delightful and you should just stop reading this review and go read it now. A fantasy/magic book that also deals with the world, this book is honestly fantastic.

This author has a very unique writing style that entices you into falling deeper into the world. Like a roller coaster, the anticipation at the beginning of the book leaves you devouring every page. Though it does lag a bit in the middle, it’s just juicy enough to keep you wanting more, until you come to the end, delighted, and considering the next book.

I think I’ll come back to this series eventually, but it’s not one where I MUST have the next book immediately. However, as a stand alone, it really is a delight to read, and as it draws from a culture and mythos that I am entirely unfamiliar with, that adds a layer of intrigue simply to learn more about things like Juju knives and Wasp Artists (which was one of the highlights of the book for me)

It's a YA fantasy novel that I found through tiktok. Some of the reviews for this book refer to it as a Nigerian Harry Potter and that doesn't feel right to me. As a huge Harry Potter fan, this book is better. The characters have more dimension and the story has good pacing. It's part of a series and I look forward to reading the rest. Overall, I'm going with a solid 7/10, would definitely recommend.

Re-read for the third book in the series. Very imaginative and unique. Love all of the Nigerian folklore and magic interwoven in the story. Great Character growth for Sunny.
