I liked the espionage aspect of this second entry and I like the romance between Isabel and the Rogue, but I wanted a little more from both of those things. The payoff of one was a little lackluster and the other was abrupt. But the historical aspects are very cool, I enjoy this world and time. And Isabel was a good leading lady, I liked her a lot! And of course the cover of this one is gorgeous as well, that was one of the things that caught me for the first book :)

Though I enjoyed the first book in the series (Ana Maria and The Fox) a bit more than this one, I still liked this one, especially because the series continues in the vein of weaving the plot with actual historical events.

The pacing of the story and the development of the romance dragged a bit for me in the first third of the book but I was happy I stuck with it as it did in fact pick up. I had been hoping for similar excitement in the third act like the first book however the tension here was no more in relation to the events happening in Mexico that Isabel was concerned with as opposed to something that happened directly to Isabel.

The chemistry between Isabel and Sirius made up for any pacing issues for me 🔥 (the scene under the desk this was welcome wink to how these two first encountered each other 🤭✨)

With respect to the romance, Sirius’ was so enamored with Isabel and it was a joy to read.  The way he affirmed her was endearing even while he battled his own demons about his worth. I appreciated how their romance blossomed from a place of appreciation-from-a-distance (and some misconceptions) to one of meaningful understanding.

The ending 🥹😭🫠🩷✨

I also have to give a special mention to Gabriela’s role in the story and how she served to disabuse Isabel of the incorrect views she (Isabel) held about herself and her worth.  Her encouragement and enabling of Isabel to explore the feelings she had for Sirius also added a special sparkle to the story.

Overall-
Not your typical wallflower and rogue story✨✨✨

I have a special place in my heart for historical romance outside of a Eurocentric lens, and I am looking forward to seeing how the series will continue with Gabriela’s book.

After reading Ana Maria and the Fox, I was so excited to read about Isabel!

Isabel has is a character that is often overlooked both by her parents and by society. She keeps to herself and loves knowledge, but she is also observant and incredibly loyal. There are so many parts of Isabel’s character that are very relevant and relatable.

Sirius seems to be the opposite of Isabel. He is well liked with in society and knows how to play his role. However, he also carries guilt and PTSD from war. It is because of the role of war hero that he is able to see beyond Isabel’s quiet façade.

Besides the beautiful romance, the author continued to explore themes of war in Mexico and how this was was perceived through a world wide lens, as well as the experiences of Mexican woman in this time. Specifically the standards they were to live by as establishes she’s by society.

Ana Maria and the Fox is still my favorite part of this trilogy, but Isabel is still one of my favorite characters!

Two years after escaping Mexico to London, Isabel has spent more time in England than she’s wanted to. Isabel longs to return to Mexico and while she knows she’ll be separated from her sisters when she does leave; she’s encouraged to find information in England to help the Juárez government so it’s safe for her to return. Never imagining that as a wallflower middle sister she’d fall in love with a rogue, Sirius.

There’s a lot of different plot lines within this story. But this is one of the main ones. At the end of the day, helping her country is her main concern and I loved that Isabel stayed true to this amidst her relationship with her sisters and growing affection for Sirius.

The sibling aspect also played a big role, between Isabel feeling left in the shadows of her sisters and inferiority associated with that to  still having a strong and deeply moving connection with her sisters. I found myself crying towards the end because of the love between siblings.

Sirius wasn’t without his own depth in character. An agent with the Home Office since his return from the Crimea as a Calvary Officer, he uses his charm and rogue reputation to learn information for the Crown. A way to assuage survivor’s guilt through his spy work and also employing and providing a place to live with his household and country estate with those he served.

There’s more to Sirius than meets the eye and once Isabel recognizes this she begins to fall for him but still doesn’t fully trust his intentions. Sirius is pretty oblivious and I wished Fox or someone else would’ve talked some sense into him sooner.

I think I could talk of this book forever, there’s so many nuances to this story that all fit together perfectly. Gabriela’s character has a lot of set up in this book and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her story.

Isabel and the Rogue is the second book in The Luna Sisters series. I’d recommend reading book one first.

I listened to book one and loved the narrator of the audiobook. I read this one with my eyes but enjoyed that I could hear the narrator’s voice during some of the commentary.

There are four encounters. Open door and descriptive with somewhat shorter scenes but still steamy.

I really liked the history woven in, teaching me about a period in Mexican history that I didn’t know about. However, I really could not get invested in the chemistry between the FMC and the MMC… Their connection was both too superficial and too intense.
