I'm a bit sad that the series is over now omg... But it was about time that I finished it as I have been reading it since 2015 :') I love this series with all of my heart!

Holy crap! This is some crazy suspenseful, twisty turny and then more twisty grade A awesome reading. I had trouble sleeping last night, because it so got into my head and I just finished it this evening, so I'm anticipating another sleepless night. I haven't read any of the other books in the series and that did not impact my ability to thoroughly enjoy this book. Great writing, great characters, great plot. Loved it!

Mo Hayder has written the penultimate story of psychological terror and horror. It is a riveting, bone-chilling tale about a family held hostage in their English country manor. This story of such evil doings will haunt you for long after you’ve finished and you will never suspect the shocking ending… it will leaving you breathless!

I was disappointed. When I saw that it was the 7th in the Jack Caffery series, I thought it was going to focus on him and his story. Unfortunately, this is misleading. Jack's story plays more of a supporting role and almost presents as an afterthought. It feels like Hayder had a small piece of information she wanted to impart to Caffery and the reader, but she couldn't just release a 20 page novella, so she constructed this elaborate plot line as a means of sneaking it in at the end. I enjoyed the main storyline, but I would have preferred Wolf to be a stand alone with no connection to Jack Caffery. She then could have written her next Caffery book and the few relevant bits from this book could have been worked into it in some way. While I like the book, it loses points because I feel like I got ripped off. As a Stand alone, I would have given it 4/5 stars, as a Caffery book, I would give it 2/5 because it was highly unsatisfactory.

This book is very good just not as good as some of the author's earlier work.

This was the seventh in the series featuring jack caffrey and as far as I can see mo hayder hasn't written a new book since 2014 so if this the end of the interesting DI then it went out on a high note with a thriller that had me gripped with tension throughout. The story is about a family held in their holiday home by two house invaders, a couple of villains whose motive is unclear as they brutalise the three victims. In the background is also a horrific murder committed in the vicinity a few years back which haunts the locals.
Caffrey, after a career jeopardising confrontation takes a break determined to find something about his brother who disappeared years ago and similarly haunts the policeman. As he meets again the walking man he is drawn into the story with a thrilling climax.
This has definitely been a series that has had it's ups and downs but I will still be sorry not revisit again a character who I have enjoyed.
