Octogenarians in fiction are trending and I'm here for it!
Tanner, 21 is the driver for Louise, 84, who is on the run in THE MOSTLY TRUE STORY OF TANNER AND LOUISE (PUB 03.28). (free review copy Berkley and NetGalley)
This cross-country adventure was fun and fabulous. So fun. Watching the relationship bloom from this unlikely pair was a trip. The story is full of charm and wit with a hefty dose of the unexpected. The underlying mystery unfolds with satisfying surprises that kept me turning the pages with gusto. Take all of that and add superb writing with outstanding character development and you have a standout read.
I also appreciated the undertones of women-supporting-women that was evident throughout. It felt authentic and refreshing.

This was a fun read with many laugh out loud moments. Louise, in her eighties and recovering from a broken hip, is forced by her family to hire Tanner, in her twenties recovering from a traumatic injury that ends her career as a college athlete. Together, this motley crew becomes friends and embarks on a cross county adventure that includes gangsters, gun fights, and encounters with the FBI.
A heartwarming, sweet story of two unlikely friends. I loved how this book peeled back layer after layer of the details of life that made the characters who they are!
The book left most storylines unfinished. Not sure if a sequel is in the works, but if not then this is completely unsatisfying.
What an absolute joy this story was! From the very beginning, I was hooked on the grumpy duo of Tanner and Louise, and as secrets unfolded, I couldn’t put their story down!
This book was such a fun adventure from the moment it began. I loved the way the book was laid out - intertwining the police interviews and phone calls others were having with Tanner and Louise’s road trip. I thought it was so well done. And there was something new you learned about these aloof characters around every turn. Without spoiling anything, one of the most fun twists of the book was made even more fun by listening to the audio. IYKYK!
And the ending was also so wonderful. I loved the way everything was wrapped up nicely, and felt so right for all of the characters. It was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Overall, this book was was a fun road trip story with constant hi-jinx; The Mostly True Story of Tanner and Louise was a blast to read.

The Mostly True Story of Tanner and Louise is the buddy outlaw comedy that I never knew I needed. Funny, intriguing, unpredictable, and delightful from start to finish, I absolutely loved this!
Louise Wilt and Tanner Quimby are polar opposites thrown together through circumstance. Louise is post hip surgery and needs an aide/driver. Tanner, also struggling with an injury, has been kicked out of her parents' home and becomes Louise's aide/roommate. Yet, despite their different personalities, they find solace in each other and grow to become allies and friends on a hilarious run-from-the-law drive across the country.
I promise you, no matter where you think this story is going, you're wrong. The story is woven brilliantly through transcripts of phone calls, FBI interviews, multiple perspectives and it keeps you guessing the entire time.
The dynamic between Louise and Tanner is hilarious and the heart of this story -- the way they challenge each other, support each other, and grow is beautiful to read. The generation gap between the two is solid comedy but also lends itself well to the commentary that runs throughout the whole story of what it is to live as a woman in this world.
I will be on the lookout for more from Colleen Oakley! This book is a beautiful blend of comedy, mystery, female empowerment and friendship. What a fantastic read.

unexpectedly LOVED this fun one! Funny and feel good, and I love me a cranky, savvy elderly woman protagonist and an unlikely friendship.
