3.45 AVERAGE

Didn't like this as much as the rest of her books I have read. Didn't find that the characters had the depth they usually do and it seemed to end abruptly. Was good but not my favorite.

Wavered between 3.5 and 4 stars. Full of vivid characters and sense of place but woefully dated in several ways and gives service to too many characters and not enough to others. In some ways this book feels very unfinished and open ended but because I fell in love with the characters I guess it’s leaving me wanting more and not feeling finished with them. Also terrible title and this story deserves a better cover. I get they need to market them as beach reads but a hetero couple silhouetted and kissing behind a beach umbrella has absolutely nothing to do with this story and in fact cheapens it.

Marguerite, haunted by the death of her best friend and the loss of an unrequited love, is jolted by a phone call from her estranged goddaughter. Renata, newly engaged to Nantucket golden boy Cade, will be visiting and wants to see Marguerite and learn more about her mother. Told in the span of one day, in parallel stories of Marguerite preparing for the dinner with Renata, and Renata contemplating her new life as an engaged woman, we learn more about the complexities of family and friendships, of love and lost chances, of regrets and the power of forgiveness.

Love Hilderbrand’s books! I enjoy her descriptions of food and Nantucket. Great storyline!

After a couple of bland books I was looking for something that was going to make me feel something and boy did this do the trick.

This book is incredibly sad and full of missed chances, and second chances. Some of the language in the book is very dated and no longer what I would consider appropriate, but seeing as this was written in the early 2000s, I can give it some what of a pass.

Overall a heartbreaking read, but so thoughtful and creative.

I had high hopes for this book based on others I've read in the past by Hilderbrand, but it unfortunately didn’t meet my standards, mainly because of the style it was written in. If Hilderbrand chose a different approach the story could have been very moving. While some parts I struggled to read through, the looming mystery got me to the end, which ended up extremely unsatisfying.

Audiobook. Working through Hildebrand‘s back list. A stunning look at love, friendship and loss. The book spans 24 hours, but it packs in a lot of backstory going back-and-forth between a godmother and her godchild. The godmother is making dinner for Renata, the godchild. The central driver of the plot was the tragedy of Renata‘s mom‘s death. Hildebrand gives us detail by detail as if she was feeding us morsels. The pace was good and the descriptions of the relationships was stunning. A fabulous read by the narrator, Christina Delaine.

This book was so unlike Elin!! It took me a minute to get into this book, but once I did, I was hooked! The main character is super interesting in the most disturbing ways. There were also some twists and turns I didn’t see coming! This women is trying to reconnect with her best friends daughter, but she hasn’t been out in ages!! Not my favorite Elin, but I liked it!!
