I think this could've used a little trimming, but I did like a lot of the themes and atmosphere.

I'm a fan of Chuck Wendig, and the female narrator was good, but I just couldn't take the male narrator any longer (I made it through about an hour or so).

There is a huge vume disparity between the two narrator's: the female is exceptionally quiet and the make is exceptionally loud. Not recommended with headphones; it was startling enough on a desktop speaker.

Volume aside, the male narrator is just... It's like he doesn't understand inflection. Or nuance. Or how ti read-as-performance.

Chuck Wendig fuckin did it again! He and Stephen Graham Jones are really neck and neck in my brain’s  Best Current Horror Author Battle Royale

This was an epic story, following different timelines, dimensions, and worlds. It’s fast-paced, exciting, and you really connect with the characters.

The strongest parts were Oliver and Nate stories. Their writing and character development felt the most rooted in the story, and you understand their motives and what’s at stake for them.

Maddie (the mother), however, is cliche, immature, and can be really corny. There are moments when she’s a successful character, but a bunch of her dialogue and internal thoughts get in the way of the enjoyment.

Another big issue I had was the dialogue. Often, it was heavy-handed and cliche. I wish there were more moments where the characters could take a breath or spend some time in their head in reflection.

I almost felt like the pace was too fast. Every line had to be “and then this happened” or “and I saw X character do…” This could’ve been a great trilogy or two-part series. Again, if there were moments of quiet, we could’ve been a bit more grounded with the characters.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I’d probably read another one by this author.

I wanted to like it, I really did. It was a hard book to get through, don’t know why, and it took me a long time to read it.

I am enjoying this but it's quite convoluted so I can't passively listen to it. I'm getting it on kindle
