The Book of Accidents

Chuck Wendig

3.76 AVERAGE

There are some laugh out loud funny parts of this book. There are also uncomfortable parts that required a trigger warning at the beginning. The central questions of nature versus nurture and the cycle of abuse combined with characters discussing causality makes this book interesting.

This book was dripping in horror tropes and unfortunately all the ones I hate. It's completely derivative, especially of Stephen King's work. Horror should have subtext, allegory and nuance. Here, the author's politics, worldviews and consistent commentary on the cycle of violence/trauma was in your face text. The plot had way too many supernatural elements. The only good thing I can say is for a 500+ page book is that he plot moved quickly.

Stop reading about this book and go in blind, it's an incredible story and the less you know about it going in the better. Trust me

The Book of Accidents is dark, eerie, and one of the more sinister books I’ve read in a while. So naturally, I loved it!

Review:
When the monster is veiled by shadow and you can only make out a vague shape, that is when the monster strikes the most fear. But eventually the monster has to be revealed. And when that happens it can turn out to be a lot of different things. In this case, it was disappointing. Once the curtains were pulled back any sense of fear and unease left and it almost turned into an entirely different book.

I had high hopes when starting this book and was pumped to read it. The first third of the book had me glued to it and I was feeling the whole "Stephen King" vibe. But somewhere along the way, I got bogged down with detail and it seemed to stretch on forever with not much happening. For me, it never regained the momentum and I lost interest. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a galley of this book for review.

I feel like this was a first draft. And about 200 pages too long. There was a LOT of unnecessary filler in there. And I'm sorry but the ending made me roll my eyes. It was well written, I liked the characters in the way you like the guy who sells you your coffee every day. Surface like.
I do appreciate how the giant mess was all tied together at the end but it took far too long to get there. I can see why others really liked this book. Just not my thing I guess.
