The author has good technical ability and good character writing, but the world-building is lacking. Also doesn't feel like a complete story, it ends with so many unanswered questions that it feels incomplete, requiring you to read the sequel to get closure.
The ending fight scene and death of the emperor felt very unsatisfying and strange. The last 10% of the book or so felt rushed and as if the editor didn't get to it. As if there were chapters missing too.
And let's be honest, what was the point of rewriting constructs during battle when you can just disable all of them in a matter of seconds?... felt like a huge plothole.

i can’t properly put into words my feelings for how much i LOVED this book
I find writing a review for The Bone Shard Daughter to be a bit difficult. There are five different POVs from all aspects of the world. We have a smuggler, an emperor's daughter, governor's daughter, a rebel and a mysterious person with no memories. The magic system is a mystery to them all and as a reader we learn with the characters. The emperor has reigned with fear and control through the removal of bone shards from his citizens. He uses these for his magic and this magic isn't like what we get in a lot of other books. Our main character, Lin, has to decide if learning and practicing this type of magic is the right thing to do. There is a history of a long ago enemy, the Alanga, that the emperor is supposedly protecting his empire from. However as we read, we aren't quite sure what to believe. The people of the story may not be who they say they are and they may not even be what they think they are. There are surprises as you move through the book but they aren't for shock and awe, they truly fit the plot. And there wasn't a cliff hanger for an ending, which was refreshing. Obviously the plot isn't finished as there is a lot more to go. But the author didn't need a cliff hanger to have me looking forward to the next book. I have the next book on hold through my library and hope to read it soon!
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
enjoyed the concept of bone shard magic, thought that was really unique. Enjoyed the character growth between the different characters. To me, the first third of the book took a while to get into and there are around 5 or 6 different PoV’s throughout the book so sometimes it’s hard to remember what happened to that character previously. But overall, a good unique fantasy novel.

There are a lot of POVs and none of them overlap. This just isn’t my kind of book. There didn’t seem to be a singular goal moving us to why we should care about all the POVs. I didn’t particularly care about any of the characters we had. I had no skin in the game at almost 100 pages in, so I just didn’t feel like going on.

had to return my copy back to the library — intriguing at first but the random switch to third person was really distracting and took me out of my immersion. will def consider picking it up again
