More grammar and less silliness than the first one but I still love this series. I really enjoy the straight-man Yam and ridiculous Donkey. Classic

A really fun and cute way to illustrate homophones to kids. I can see this also making a good read aloud. I wouldn't use this as a stand-alone to teach homophones to young children, but possibly as a follow-up on a lesson using another book with more clear, straight-forward illustrations of homophones. I love Llamaphones for a fun beginning to the concept of homophones with kids. Plus, even as an adult, I loved the illustrations!

I remain kind of uneasy about the Stepin Fetchit-ness of this donkey. The combination of the classic verbal patterns (always using 3nd-person verbs, i.e. "You is not cute and fluffy!"), his wide grin and pop eyes - I don't know. It just feels minstrel-y to me, and surely unintentional, but... that's what editors are for.

I love this one even more than the first one. Full of homonyms and lots of wacky, word misunderstandings, if you aren't laughing out loud by the time this one is done, you're clearly in a really bad mood!

Wacky and silly, this book about homonyms will tickle the funny bones of readers who can grasp the wordplay.

A grumpy grammarian yam and a dopey donkey argue over language misunderstandings. Unfunny.

Funny to me but over the heads of my kids (6 and 9).

I am a Yam was the Panda Book Award winner during the 2018-2019 school year, and it was a hit with our students. I read this to them, and they loved it as well, though they wanted to know how the yam survived (since he was eaten at the end of the first book). Funny story for teaching homonyms.

Disclaimer: I am a huge nerd for homophones, so my review is a smidge biased.

Donkey and Yam are back and this time they are joined by Ewe, which causes all kinds of homonym-based confusion. When Yam introduces Ewe to Donkey, the misguided mammal hears "you" and the tuber spends the rest of the book trying to clarify what he meant. Then a ram joins the trio and all hope is lost! Just like "I Yam a Donkey!," this book is best as a read aloud and it will have kids (and adults) cracking up. Bell does an excellent job of teaching readers about homonyms in a humorous way, making this a wonderful classroom resource as well.
