Loved this book. In the extremely patriarchal world of 15th century china, doctors cannot see their female patients in person, they have to see them behind a screen and not touch them directly.
This book follows a young girl from an elite family who is taught medicine from her grandparents and goes on to fight for her right to actually treat female patients in person.
Feminism, friendship, history, this book has it all, add it to your tbr pile!

I enjoyed it and it made me kind of nostalgic because it reminded me of a lot of the novels I enjoyed reading as a young tween. This would have really knocked my socks off if I'd gotten to read it back then-- it was probably better than a lot of what I was reading. Also, I was fascinated by the history of oppressive women's fashions around that age and would have had an extra appreciation for all the foot-binding content. This is a book people of most ages would probably enjoy although it's probably not suitable for very young children. I really liked the character growth and female friendship.
I read it because it's a top ten finalist for One Book One Lincoln, but I feel kind of bad for it because there's no way it's gonna beat James lol

This book taught me so much about Chinese medicine and the secret lives of wealthy women at this time. I felt it would have benefitted from not having the intrigue around the death and staying focused on the day to day life of the women.
