Loved IT! Jane Igharo’s debut is one of my favorite reads of 2020. this is the story of Azere, who immigrated to Canada from Nigeria as a child. she is constantly feeling the pole between her Nigerian culture and emvracing her new Canadian home. she made a promise to her father on his deathbed that she would Mary a Nigerian man. A promise that her mother reminds her of on a regular basis. when Azere meets Rafael she is instantly drawn to him even though he is definitely not Nigerian. A one night fling can’t hurt, right? Well it looks as though the fates have other plans.

This book was the perfect blend of romcom humor and family drama. Azere was such a great character and I really felt for her. She really was so torn between two worlds. Rafael was a great guy who really tried to be supportive and understanding. I had a hard time with Azere‘s mother. I really could not understand her actions, although I did try to remember that she is from a different culture than me. there were also quite a few pop culture references woven throughout the story that I loved. A fun Romance with a lot of heart.

*** Big thank you to Berkley for my gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own. ***

I honestly wanted to try to give this book more stars. It has everything I should want- a multicultural romance, strong African female lead, familial ties, sexy ness. Everything in the story is rushed, though. There isn’t time to get to know any characters, love them, or become invested in their story. The romance is caught somewhere between soap opera and a tween romance novel. The complexity of a relationship that potentially dishonors family and culture should be raw and treated with care in the story. Instead of being drawn out and examined, it’s rushed by you in a series of disjointed sentences. Overall this book was not for me.

Amazing read
I listened to this on audible. And I would highly recommend it. The story line is abit cliche coming from an African family but the narration was so captivating it still kept me hooked through to the end. This was a great read.

Maybe I’m biased because the author is Nigerian or because the protagonist is an eldest daughter in an African household like I am, but I don’t care, I really really liked this book.

I’m not a big fan of romance but I found myself laughing, crying and even yelling at the book like a crazy person. The author made a very enjoyable approach to the dynamics of interracial relationships and the expectations that African parents have of their children, specifically their eldest daughters.

Reading about a Nigerian protagonist dealing with cultural expectations was a learning experience that I appreciated since I didn’t know much. This is a total rom-com read that would be good if you need a fluff to detox your brain from crazy reality.

nope. that cover is so stunning, and the actual book is so disappointing.
I liked the description of the main character's life in a Nigerian village before she came to Canada at age 12. I assumed because of the protag's Nigerian upbringing and the title "ties that tether" that this would be an interesting romance with a culture clash trope. and it was. for like ten pages. Then that was followed by every single other plotline that has ever been in a romance. It was an explosion of romance tropes. It was chestnut salad. I would not have been surprised if one of the men turned out to be a vampire or some sort of alpha wolf. (honestly, it would have really spiced this up)
This overabundance of cliches was not at all redeemed by sparkling dialogue or steamy romance. There was none of that. Other reviewers seem to have really enjoyed it. Maybe they just mean the cover.

For a romance novel, I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it as much as I did! Reading it to prepare for the Girly Book Club’s virtual retreat this upcoming weekend and I crushed it in a couple sittings! So good. If you like romcom movies, this one is for you. I don’t know how unique it is compared to other romance novels, but it hits on a lot of topics that we can relate to. Loss. Love. Race. Culture. Family.

If you want a quick read, or a little romcom drama action, pick this up!
