من کتاب رو دوست داشتم، فقط یک نکته ای که آزارم داد، این بود که بعضی جاها داستان خیلی دردناک و حتی کمی چندش آور می شد.

Beautiful, beautiful book. The story is sad, yet hopeful. I love the characters, from Annabelle to Toby to Annabelle's family. Lauren Wolk's first person prose is perfect for this story as well.

This book really touched me. It made me think. It made me feel. It was well written and well paced. It showed what individuals and societies do when they put fear above reason. It had historical content I had never heard before. It commented on the devastating effects of war while talking very little about battle. I, personally, loved this book.
That said, this book is labeled as a children’s book. I think it would be very difficult for kids to unpack this on their own. It is dark and heavy and sad. It is not a book I would give them to read silently. It could be a read-aloud that should include much discussion.
This is a book I wish I had someone to discuss it with.

So good! Historical fiction/mystery. Annabelle is a twelve year old living in PA during the second world war. Her family is fairly wealthy, having a large farm. Betty is new to Wolf Hollow; she quickly shows her colors as a bully to Annabelle. She threatens Annabelle’s brothers with violence unless Annabelle brings her something - since Annabelle is ‘so rich’. Betty becomes more and more angry and violent, hurting a classmate, Ruth, severely, and trying to bodily harm Annabelle’s brother. Meanwhile, Toby, a WWI veteran and hermit, who is taken care of by Annabelle and her mother, notices all the bad things Betty is doing. He tries to collect evidence and intervene. Betty points the finger to Toby. The community is inclined to believe her. After all, he is a strange man living in the woods, right? Annabelle knows the truth and tries to clear Toby’s name. I really love this story of loyalty and friendship. Caring for those around you. This is a middle-grades read, but I think it could be for anyone!

Bursting with characterization. Morally murky situations with lots of room for discussion. Over reliant on device of narrator declaring that they have a plan but not telling the reader what it is.
World class writing. Much more a literary heavyweight than I was expecting, even with people warning me. Wow.
This is a good book. But it's also an extremely depressing book. I don't know if I could bring myself to read it again. But it's really well done. And such a good story about the importance of truth. I've seen a lot of comparisons to To Kill a Mockingbird, which I can see, although they're quite different. It's definitely worth reading, and I think a good school unit could come out of it.
