Nice to return to this series after a three-year break (for no particular reason). This is another series my mom read when I was a kid that I picked up for nostalgia, but this was a fun mystery! A woman goes missing in the '50s; good ol' Kinsey investigates in the '80s, so we get to know the characters through the decades. Never bored & didn't guess the twist! Plus, not sure there's a better lady detective than Kinsey. Glad to be back.

I found the mystery in this story really compelling, and I liked the perspective shifts to give a fuller account of the story then Kinsey would ever be able to dig up on her own. Usually I'm not a big fan, but Grafton handles this masterfully. I was a little disappointed about the number of unanswered questions I felt were still hanging around at the end, but that's the way it goes in life so it adds an extra realistic feel.

I was all set to give this entry in the Alphabet series a better rating, since it steered clear of most of what I dislike about these books (the elderly friends, the daily three mile runs, the Quarter Pounder fetish). The mystery was interesting (except for the fact that the missing person was so unlikable that I couldn't care less if she were dead). The flashbacks told from multiple points of view were a nice change of pace. But then Grafton ended on her usual note, rushing the denouement as if she just realized she hit her word limit. Left with a ludicrous chase scene that seemed very similar to other books in the series and an inadequate explanation of the crime. Such a letdown.

in which kinsey helps daisy sullivan find out what happened to her mother years and years after she disappears from the small town of serena station.

there's an episode of the gilmore girls where sookie is looking forward to reading "s is for silence" at the ski lodge but she is pregnant and doesn't know it yet. she is telling lorelai how everything about the trip went wrong "and 's is for silence' SUCKED!"

so hah, i kind of expected this one to not be so good. i take book recommendations from fictional characters all the time.

but i loved this one! i really think it was my favorite so far. sue grafton tries a new trick where she switches into third person narration focused on some other characters. i thought it worked really well for this story.

This book has a completely different style than the rest of the series. This book used two separate timelines to tell the story, and while both were very good they didn't mess well or make that much sense. The present-day story is told in the same manner as most of the previous stories in the series but with Kinsey being a bit more active and engaged with the plot. The second story taking place in 1953 is told from multiple POVs and is actually the more interesting story. The part that doesn't make sense is the fact that it is never explained how we as the reader are getting that storyline.

I liked the story...plot line and characters of this one. I liked how it went back piecing there story together. What I didn’t like is I am still not sure I understand they of the why of this who done it.

Read April 2023

I loved this one. The back and forth of the story from past to future, the different chapters from the perspective of different characters... It all worked beautifully. Fantastic story.
