Liked this a lot more than I thought I would! Was kind of an impulse buy on my end but the story and plot really engaged me and I enjoyed the world building and aesthetics quite a bit. I will be interested to see what the next books have in store!

This is my second book by Mx. Polk and it blew me away. Notably, this is not “the same book in a different font” when compared to The Midnight Bargain. The characters and storyline arevvery different.
I started Witchmark thinking it was a standalone, and was genuinely excited to learn there were 2 more in the trilogy. If a book can keep my interest past the first installment, I am thrilled. TBH I’m not sure why more people aren’t talking about this book.
Lastly, I listened on audiobook, and Samuel Roukin brings the thoughtfulness and compassion of the MMC to life.
Things I liked:
- The pacing! The story moves quickly enough to hold interest, and manages not to skip over world building details
- The growth of the FMC. Her journey and character evolved as the story progressed and it was a pleasure to share
- The villainess of the villain. Not trite or cliche, still is the antithesis to the main character
- Edwardian England + WW1 vibes
- A queer (m/m) romance written by a queer author
Things I didn’t like
- I would’ve liked a tiny bit more spice, though it is not necessary to the story at all. The love scene is handled well as written.

Pulled me right out of the reading slump.
One of the only mysteries that worked for me.
One of the only mysteries that worked for me.
Read this all in one sitting. Having no service whatsoever really helps me read!
The summary on this is awfully misleading. I mean it’s all accurate it’s just doesn’t really tell you anything about what the book’s about. IE: queer love, murder mysteries, and family dynasties. I quite enjoyed it! Some quibbles with pacing and the very quickly wrapped-up ending, but a good mystery, interesting worldbuilding, and gay love. What’s not to love?
I hear the 2nd one is about Grace in a lesbian relationship which is wonderful but I’m not sure I can take an entire book of trying to feel sympathetic to her after what she’s done to Miles

Loved everything but the ending. I felt it came on rather quickly and didn't feel very earned. With the all the world building and character conflict, I almost think this could have been split into 2 books.
I liked the premise and the characters, but I don't feel like the overall story was well executed. I may or may not read the next, but if I do Im not pressed to do so soon.
