oh to be a girl flying through space gig economy and playing space dnd every single night

my favorite thing about this book was just how quiet this was, and I don’t think it’s entirely easy to explain what I mean by quiet, like yes, it was low stakes, but that is not what I mean. What I do mean is that I just enjoyed the found family for our main character Mia - I enjoyed how everyone had very fleshed out characters and ultimately i just like how mundane and unique this concept was. You don’t often see a space opera with the world so complex but at the same time, the focus is on the characters. We learn about the world in bits and pieces but the characters never lose focus in any of this. You don’t get a big adventure where all of them are of fighting a big big war, but you do get see them doing day-to-day tasks. My favorite thing was just the interactions that the characters had it felt so organic and genuine but most importantly, it just felt like these people were friends because they just liked each other and each other’s companies and I just enjoyed that. Obviously, this review would be incomplete without me, mentioning the art which was simply gorgeous. There were so many panels that were actually breathtaking that I had to stop for a minute and just soak it in. This was one of my favorite experiences ever in terms of reading a graphic novel, and to think I was about to DNF it.

4 ⭐️ The more I think about this book the more it gives me the warm and fuzzies. Story wise at first I was a little lost. It took a bit to get into BUT once it hit it’s groove I was all in. The art took a bit to get into for me also but DAMN the whole page spreads were beautiful near the end. I loved the colors used and how it seemed like a bunch of dream sequences. A lot of LGBTQIA representation. Probably the most of anything I’ve ever read. ALSO talk on consent ✨ AND talk on normalizing pronouns ✨ AND ✨ love ✨

Would I recommend this book? Totally. It’ll give ya the warm and fuzzies.

I love when authors write kids as kids so well. Mia and Grace are shy and awkward and just trying to do the best they can. The trope of falling in love at boarding school is an old one and I guess an old queer one specifically but Walden takes it in a completely new direction that looks nothing like the old English boarding school romances. Everyone is perfectly endearing and there aren't really any evil people, just people trying to do their best with different agendas.

On a Sunbeam truly is one of a kind.

The visuals, color schemes, and character dynamics are all visually stunning. The author carefully picks out colors that complement each other, with seamless transitions between panels. Genuinely a treat for the artistic soul.

This graphic novel will have you gasping in shock at reveals, crying at the conflicts, and eager to flip onto the next page. The novel covers LGBTQ+ themes of regret and forgiveness, family, and friendship, and most of all, romance with minor depictions of violence. Otherwise, this lesbian focused romance has captured my heart with its sci-fi worldbuilding of mythical creatures and architecture, at a 20-chapter pacing.

I highly recommend such a book for those sci-fi fans that wish for LGBTQ+ content, or even those exploring the community in the first place.

If you have not yet checked out the other works of author Tillie Walden, I recommend that as well. If you cannot access a physical copy, she has listed a free version online on her personal store: https://www.onasunbeam.com/.

Did I mention it was free?

Also, Walden has written some other amazing graphic novels, such as a close favorite of mine, Spinning. Overall, On a Sunbeam is an absolute must-read! -Lilia Z., SPL Teen Volunteer
