She's not known as one of America's best poets for nothing.

it’s hard to rate this, as my main problem with this book wasn’t with the poems but with the organization. I feel that grouping any poems by subject matter once the poet has passed away is a disservice to the poet, as it’s just speculating as to what the meaning was. Dickinson’s work is often analyzed to death & from that we get this sort of skewed view of what all of her work is about. I also didn’t like that the poems didn’t have numbers attached so that we could get a feel for how late or early in her life Dickinson was writing these poems.

that all being said, I enjoyed taking a trip through Dickinson’s writing. it was exactly what one has grown to expect from her but also so much more. I have a much greater appreciation for her work after reading so much of it.

I’m settling on 3.5 for the writing combined with my distaste for the organization.

I just love Emily Dickinson so much!! The letters to Sue and the poems about death were my favourite!

‘A man may make a Remark -
In itself - a quiet thing
That may furnish the Fuse unto a Spark -
In formant nature - lain -

Let us deport - with skill -
Let us discourse - with care -
Powder exists in Charcoal -
Before it exists in Fire.’

The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson by Emily Dickinson – She is my favorite female American poet because I am an English major and if I qualify everything I can have more favorites. They make kids read her in high school because she is incredible in such a short span of pages that you might actually get high schoolers to like poetry! I’m of the opinion that her poetry is better for never being published. The stuff I write only for myself is more honest. And if nothing else, this curious lady’s voice is always honest. Happy Reading (or rereading if your high school English teachers did you a favor)!

Fantastic.
