I got very bored by the end, but the lore is very fun
This was such an entrancing read!
While reading this I did find myself comparing it to Serpent & Dove. While there are similar elements, I enjoyed this book much more.
The world of the Lesseurs and Ferriers was much more intriguing and unique to me. Also, as someone who doesn’t know much French, I found that it’s use in this book was much easier for me to follow. I didn’t find myself pausing to look words up, either they were eventually explained or I could pick up their meaning through context which kept me much more involved in the story.
Normally I do not enjoy switching POV throughout the story but I think the author does it well here. If this is something holding you back from reading this book please reconsider!
Overall, I think the friendship between Ailesse and Sabine was very well written and I am excited to learn more about them. I do think the romance between Bastien and Ailesse was a bit lacking and that the enemies to lovers could’ve been drawn out more, with more time given to their relationship.
All in all I found this book really atmospheric, a great pick for fall/halloween! Looking forward to reading the next installment!

I received an ARC from Edelweiss, which I voluntarily read and reviewed. All opinions are my own. Thank you so much to Edelweiss and the publisher for providing this copy.
I immensely enjoyed this original fantasy read. It was an all-absorbing page-turner! When I read the synopsis, I could not wait to read this book. The interesting use of animals bones, Ailesse’s destiny to kill the boy she’s supposed to love, Bastien’s vengeance, and Sabine’s will drew me in. It had everything I want in a fantasy, including fantastic world-building, a unique magic system, forbidden romance, strong female characters, incredible friendships, and a complex plot. If you are looking for a unique fantasy world to fall into, pick up this book! 5 out of 5 stars!

Well, it dragged a bit in the middle, but I couldn't put it down in the end. This was just a really solid fantasy read, featuring a unique kind of magic (CW for animal killings) and intriguing lore, and a lovely female friendship at the heart of things. Both Sabine and Ailesse were really likeable characters, and I was fascinated by Ailesse's mother too. Jules annoyed me in this one (girl needs more depth if she's going to spend the whole book being angsty over a boy), but as this is just the first book, I'm interested to see where we go next with all the characters Spoiler(Wouldn't it be fun if Sabine and Jules ended up being a thing? This book was very hetero lol. Alas, Sabine is probably destined for the prince dude. Or Bastien.). The magic and lore surrounding the Bone Criers was definitely my favourite element of the story, and the mystery around Ailesse's mother.
I feel like this series has a lot of potential, I just kind of hope it avoids the predictable Spoilere.g. Sabine and the prince. Also, even more lore please!
Unfortunately, this book drifted more to the side of disappointing leading to a two star review. The positives, a good concept and storyline and good world building. I liked Bastien and Aliesse's characters , both headstrong driven, smart and good at heart. I love a good 'enemies to lovers' but the problem with this book is I didn't think it was well executed. I felt this way mostly because of Sabine's character. She wasn't that all interesting and had this terrible meekness to her. We're in the age of powerful heroines, who save entire kingdoms and Sabine could barely find the courage to do what she was born to as a Leuress. Even if she had decided she wanted to choose a different life that would have been preferable. She took up to much time in the book and I feel that took away from Aliesse and Bastien who are the real starts of the show. It also became clear early that Aliesse's mother was the enemy, yet Sabine failed to fully challenge her. I don't think much happened in the story overall, clearly intending to pave the way for the sequel. But with Sabine as the lead in the sequel I'm not at all excited for it.

I just could not get into this book. It seemed very convoluted and I did not feel like each character truly had their own voice. I feel like more world-building and explanations were needed to help actual explain the world and get a better understanding of the characters. The premise was interesting but the execution was poor.

I'm not sure right now so I'm going to give it a 3.
Because while I did fly through this book and enjoyed that the women get heighten abilities from particular animal bones that helps them crier souls into the after life. I just dunno
At the end of the book.... I had that twilight feeling like I just read all this and nothing really happened. But running and a couple fighting scenes.
I'm almost 100% sure who Sabine's dad is and if that's the case I'm pretty sure how the next book will go.

More like 2.5.
Great concept but a lot of the story was very shallow. The love story fell very flat and I found I wasn't really rooting for them to end up together because I just didn't care about their relationship.
I doubt I'll read the second book.
