I listened to the audiobook while reading along with my own copy of the book that I found. I wanted to read this because it was becoming a movie, but I didn't enjoy it. There were elements of it that were okay and enjoyable, but it was just too long. Kinda wished I DNF it.

Really liked the espionage storyline, although some parts were difficult to read. Each chapter ends in a recipe and after a conclusion of each chapter I would always tell myself “maybe I’ll try this recipe”, a unique addition to the book.

Surprisingly engaging spy thriller with a lot of Russian espionage details that have veracity and depth. Of course, this series has a huge amount of verisimilitude, because it's written by a former CIA officer.

What I really enjoyed was the side trajectories inside the book... like the fact that syntheses is a core plot device (very unusual!) and that every single chapter ends with... a recipe!

It's a surprising and interesting thriller. Highly recommended.

I didn't know the world needed an American John LeCarre, but here we are. Cannot wait to read the follow-up.

Onions. This novel is a glorious spy novel with as many layers of intrigue as a large onion! Curiously it is also the strangest cookbook I've read. After completing the first chapter, I was treated to a simple recipe, which a character had consumed in earlier pages-I didn't think much of it, until I encountered another recipe at the end of the next chapter, and each subsequent chapter as well. It's the most curious "cooking spy" novel - and the characters and plot lines are as flavorful as the recipes described!

Brilliant book , grips you from the start and whilst it has its grimy and dirty moments it is a modern successor to John Le Carri. It moves fast but doesn't rush and has all the hallmarks of a thrilling spy book here's to the next two in the series

Movie was better.

Awesome!

So many characters its hard to follow but good read.

Author is former CIA. I started this book twice as I couldn't get into it the first time. There are lots of abbreviations. It was an ok read. I liked how there was a recipe included at the end of the chapter. I won't read the rest of the series.
