Entertaining enough, but “in tradition of John le Carre” this is not.

To es tūlīt pārbaudīšu.

Don't let the movie mislead you. It's a solid spy thriller, nice twists and surprises.

3.5

Love a good spy story, and this was a fun fictional follow up to the excellent [b:The Spy and the Traitor|37542581|The Spy and the Traitor The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War|Ben Macintyre|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1522906662l/37542581._SY75_.jpg|59145602].

I watched the movie first, but they're so different, it didn't spoil anything for me.

Looking forward to the next book!

One thing that was very cool to learn is that prior to becoming a novelist, Jason Matthews spent 33 years working for the CIA. While in the CIA he was officially a diplomat, in Europe, Asia and the Caribbean, but his real job was recruiting and then managing foreign agents.
_________

There are recipes at the end of every chapter. Matthews covers what things smell like and textures and even Dominika (the "Red Sparrow") has synesthesia and can see sounds and auras. Attention is brought to daily activities like dining to provide a richer tapestry and "3D" experience to the story.

Definitely my first cookbook-spy thriller-combo! I'm not sure how eager I am to eat most of the recipes, but I thought it was funny/interesting/strange how many of them included sour cream.

Jason Matthews would not have sold this book if he hadn't been CIA.

I really wanted to like it. I love a good spy novel, and I liked threads of it. The fact that he had been CIA and knew all the tradecraft made it interesting in itself. But the characters were underdeveloped, and the propaganda was SO STRONG. Constant. The guy in this book is SUCH a Mary Sue. Still, I liked Dominika, and it was mostly good.

The idea of the sparrow program is really interested me and I would love to see someone else explore that.

Red Sparrow starts off slowly... I wasn't certain that I was going to finish it for the first 100 pages. But it is worth working through the slow start, because once it gets going, the story continues to accelerate through to the end.

In its detailed description of spy tradecraft, Red Sparrow seems very authentic and believable, which makes sense considering author Jason Matthews is a 30 year veteran of the CIA. In addition, the protagonist of the book is compelling---a gorgeous female Russian spy possessing gifts and issues in equal measure. without letup.

I feel very comfortable recommending Red Sparrow to readers who enjoy spy novels.

Great book! Recipes were a welcoming surprise. Thanks JM.

I don’t know why this took me so long to read because I really liked it. The beginning I just kept reading a few minutes here and there. Until I couldn’t put it down and finished the last 300 pages this weekend. Spy novel at its finest. Can’t wait to read the next two in the trilogy. And maybe even see the movie when it comes out.

Jason Matthews writes the longest sentences I've ever read. A taut thriller that was exciting from beginning to end.
